Deion Sanders is one of the most talked-about names in sports right now. He has made headlines as the coach of the Colorado Buffaloes but also because of his son, Shedeur Sanders. The younger Sanders is one of the top quarterback prospects in the upcoming draft. Many teams are in need of a new signal caller, and the young player has shown that he can make big throws. However, going high in the draft often means getting on a subpar team. In a recent interview, Deion Sanders revealed he may try to influence where his son gets drafted.
Deion Sanders On Shedeur Sanders
Deion Sanders made an appearance on the Nightcap show with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson. These two are often able to get him to loosen up, and Coach Prime is usually not afraid to speak his mind. He revealed he might try to influence where his son gets drafted.
“Honestly, we’ve talked about it extensively,” Sanders explained. “I talk to a multitude of teams at practice every day, but I want what’s best for him. I want him to be happy as well. You really don’t get to dictate where your son gets to go because there’s a draft process, but you know us. You know how we are, we know who ain’t trying to win in the NFL. You know who’s consistently in the basement year after year after year. You don’t want that situation for your kid or your family members. Nobody, none of them. So we know what time it is.”
Not all NFL franchises are created equal. This year, we have especially seen players who are finally in a good situation start to blossom. Sam Darnold was labeled as a bust but is thriving with Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota. Deion doesn’t want his son to go to a team that will set him up to fail.
Historical Precedence
This isn’t the first time this has happened in the world of sports. In the most recent NBA Draft, LeBron James and his agent basically told teams not to draft Bronny James. They threatened all kinds of things if he was drafted to another team besides the Los Angeles Lakers. Teams decided it wasn’t worth the hassle and let the Lakers draft him. In the NFL, the most famous case of this was Eli Manning.
The then San Diego Chargers had the number one overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. Manning refused to play for them and was ultimately traded to the New York Giants. In 2021, he explained the situation.
“It was my decision having talked with my agent, coaches, [general managers] and owners. Going through the draft process, I was just worried about the Chargers organization at the time. I felt it was the right decision and I had a little pull.”
Deion Sanders could easily make it known that his son will not play for certain teams. It will add an interesting wrinkle to this draft cycle. Teams could end up having more or less leverage, depending on what happens. Love them or hate them, the Sanders family will be talked about a lot this offseason.
