Darvin Ham Joins Milwaukee Bucks Staff After 2023–24 Season Failure With Lakers

NBA All-Star Weekend

After getting sacked by the Los Angeles Lakers on May 3, 2024, Darvin Ham joins the Milwaukee Bucks staff as their lead assistant coach as per ESPN’s Adrain Wojnarowski.

Darvin Ham, a former NBA player (1996-2005) coached the Lakers for two seasons (2022-2024). However, he couldn’t meet the Los Angeles Lakers standards as he failed to advance the Lakers in the best-of-seven series twice, losing to the Denver Nuggets during the first round of the 2023-24 playoff series.

Thus, how does this reunion mean another championship for the Milwaukee Bucks?

Doc Rivers Outlook As Darvin Ham Joins Milwaukee Bucks Staff

Doc Rivers Outlook As Darvin Ham Joins Milwaukee Bucks Staff

Doc Rivers was hired in the middle of the season when the Bucks fired Adrian Griffin. During this period the Milwaukee Bucks were the third seed in the Eastern Conference 30-13 with 39 games to go. However, when Doc Rivers joined, the Bucks went 17-19.

Doc Rivers won the NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008 to strengthen his reputation. However, this wasn’t a good start for Rivers as he has been a coach for 24 consecutive years.

With Ham as Rivers’ assistant, the Milwaukee Bucks could become stronger contenders for the NBA Championship next season. One of the factors to bring out the best in your team as an NBA coach is the player-coach relationship and Darvin Ham is the right man for the job.

Milwaukee Bucks Offseason: Ham Reunites With The Franchise

Ham was the assistant head coach for the Bucks and led them to their first NBA Final win berth in 2021 since 1971. During this period, Mike Budenholzer was the head coach of the team; also, Mike and Ham worked together at the Atlanta Hawks.

Spending four seasons (2018-2022) as the assistant head coach in the Milwaukee Bucks, Ham has earned the franchise’s respect and cordial relationship with the team’s vital players: the two-time MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brook Lopez, and Khris Middleton.

As Giannis may extend his contracts with the Milwaukee Bucks, Darvin coming back into the franchise could ignite the camaraderie between the team leader, Giannis, and other players. Also, he could help Doc Rivers use the Milwaukee players and bring out their best performance.

Ham’s NBA Coaching Jobs

This isn’t the first time Darvin Ham has been with the Los Angeles Lakers. He said his NBA career as the assistant coach of the team from 2011 to 2013. Before the Lakers, Ham was an assistant coach at the then New Mexico Thunderbirds now Cleveland Charge in the then D-League.

After leaving the Lakers as their assistant coach, the 50-year-old joined the Atlantic Hawks where he met a partner who would trust him. Ham met Mike Budenholzer and worked at the Hawks with him from 2013 to 2018. Finally, Mike and Ham worked together with the Milwaukee Bucks from 2018 to 2022 and won a championship.

With these attractive stats and a high hope of a greater future for the Lakers’s team, the franchise hired Ham to work as their head coach. However, Darwin fumbled in his role as their head coach.

The last straw was when the Lakers won one game against the Nuggets during the 2023-24 best-of-seven series. Ham has a record of 90-74 for the regular season and 9-12 for the postseason with the club.
