Dana White Confirms Match: Strickland vs. du Plessis

Dana White

Dana White recently made a big announcement in the UFC’s middleweight division. The Champion, Dricus du Plessis, is a rising figure in his division, and until now, he has been undefeated for a long time. Plessis defeated Israel Adesanya in the recent UFC 305, which gave him extra fame and attention. White revealed his plans to stage a rematch of Strickland and Plessis, and according to White, this fight makes the most sense right now.

On the other hand, Dricus’s coach has a different suggestion for the upcoming fight. He focused on the concept that whoever emerges victorious in the UFC 308 co-main event fight will face Plessis. Fighters like Robert Whittaker and Khamzat Chimaev could surpass Strickland and be the No.1 contender for the title.

Dana White Selecting the Venue

Du Plessis was the first South African to win the UFC belt in the middleweight division, and even before capturing the title, he wanted to make a UFC event happen in Africa. After defeating one of the greatest fighters of the UFC, Strickland, and securing the title, his words have more value than ever. Although there are plenty of difficulties in managing an event in Africa, White will try his best to make it happen.

White said this about the event in Africa. “You know how bad I want this. I’ve been trying to get this thing done. The arena situation there is tough. It’s tough to pull off. So that’s been the challenge with Africa as a whole. We’re trying to figure it out.”

Dricus du Plessis vs. Strickland

White is focusing on the specific location because he made a promise to the current champion. Plessis told him he would win the fight and even have a knockout win. In return, White will have to do an event in Africa. Dricus did what he said, and now it is time for White to fulfill his end of the bargain.

Although the idea of UFC having an African event is under discussion and different situations are being discussed, it would be a great move for the African fighters. It would be an honor for Adesanya, Francis Ngannou, and Kamaru Usman to have their origins in Africa. During their prime, this never happened.

White discussed different problems about Africa in these words. “The place that we would have to do it at is outdoors, and you know how I feel about that. So I’ve been trying to figure out the weather and one of the big things that I’ve been hearing out there is that wind is a big problem. We’ve done it a couple times, but anything that could affect the outcome of the fight makes me not even want to try. And it’s anything, from wind, rain, bugs, too much humidity. A lot of things can interfere with the fight.”

Final Thoughts

The event in Africa is big news, but the UFC world is also excited about the upcoming Strickland vs. Dricus match. If Dricus retains the title after this fight, he will look forward to fighting the new challengers, Whittaker or ‘The Borz’ Chimaev from Chechnya after they fight in the UFC 308 card.

If Strickland wins instead of Plessis, the result will be the same. Dana White confirmed that Dricus would fight Strickland, and the location would not matter. What are your thoughts about the upcoming fight between Dricus de Plessis and Sean Strickland?
