Dallas Mavericks’ Top Headlines During Essential Week

Dirk Nowitzki, Klay Thompson

The Dallas Mavericks have been making many headlines so far this NBA offseason and free agency.

The Mavericks made a major splash in this year’s free agency by signing the now-former “Splash Brother” Klay Thompson to a three-year, $50 million contract. The Mavericks’ signing of Thompson, 34, was a good, if not great, choice, as he’s a four-time NBA champion and a five-time NBA All-Star. Plus Mavericks star Luka Doncic is reportedly “really ecstatic” about Thompson’s contract in free agency and “looking forward” to playing alongside him after his historic 13-year tenure with the Golden State Warriors.

That said, these are the Mavericks’ top headlines for the week of Monday, July 1.

Dallas Mavericks Trade With Golden State Warriors
Klay Thompson

The Dallas Mavericks made a trade with the Golden State Warriors in NBA free agency. The Mavericks arguably acquired the missing piece they needed for an NBA championship as they’re set to acquire Klay Thompson. Thompson is one of the greatest shooters in NBA history. He evolved into a sixth-man role in the 2023-24 NBA season, his 13th season with Golden State.

The Mavericks came off a run to the 2024 NBA Finals and traded Josh Green, an Australian shooting guard and small forward, to the Charlotte Hornets in the Klay Thompson deal, according to ESPN. Green averaged 11.4 minutes per game for Dallas last season where he scored 2.6 points per game.

The details for the Green trade haven’t been finalized, but Charlotte is expected to send two second-round draft picks to Dallas, and one of the two picks could end up with Golden State.

Klay Thompson’s Contract With Dallas Mavericks

As mentioned earlier, Klay Thompson’s contract with the Dallas Mavericks is $50 million over three years. But Thompson’s contract will not have a player option, as sources recently told ESPN he reportedly agreed to do a straight three-year deal without one.

Thompson’s agreement with Dallas might be the safest option for both parties. The Mavericks acquired Thompson to gain a new weapon to use alongside current stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Thompson has only shot less than 40% from the three-point line twice in his NBA career so far. However, Thompson is an injury-prone NBA shooting guard and small forward.

He got off to a slow start last season, and although he improved as time progressed, he finished with one of the worst stat lines of his career after averaging 17.9 points, 3.5 three-pointers made, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, and shooting 43.2% from the field. In addition, he was just 38.7% from beyond the arc, which was the second-worst mark of his career.

Steph Curry Comments On Klay Thompson’s Departure

Golden State Warriors

Steph Curry and Klay Thompson became one of the greatest backcourts of all time. Now, Curry and Thompson will be on separate NBA teams for the first time in their respective NBA careers. Thompson’s signing with the Dallas Mavericks split up the world-famous “Splash Brothers” duo with Curry.

Curry commented on Thompson’s departure from Golden State by posting 30 photos of him and Thompson on his Instagram story and writing a message to bid Thompson farewell at the end.

Curry’s message read, “Gonna miss you @klaythompson. Even though we won’t finish the journey together, what we did will never be done again. Couldn’t have imagined a better run with you and @money23green [Draymond Green]. Changed the whole Bay Area. Changed the way the game is played. Killa Klay at the center of it all. Thank you for everything bro. Go enjoy playing basketball and doing what you do. Splash Bros 4 life my guy.”

Curry and Thompson achieved everything a pair could hope for in the NBA. Now, Thompson could be a good fit in Dallas, as long as he bounces back from last season with Golden State.
