Chicago Bears’ Rookie QB1 Facing Grim Fate

Chicago Bears

Patience is a thing of the past. There is no grace period for developing quarterbacks anymore. The stakes are too high. Look at 2nd-year QB Bryce Young of the Carolina Panthers who got benched two games into the 2024 season. He’s only played in 18 NFL games for one of the worst franchises in recent history. Could Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears suffer a similar fate?

No Offense, None Taken

Being Caleb Williams is probably a pretty good life. You win a Heisman trophy for one of the most illustrious college football programs and get your jersey retired. You’re the number one overall pick in the NFL draft and sign a lucrative rookie contract to become a millionaire in your early 20s. You have all the athleticism in the world, and a humble attitude to go along with it. You take over the reins to a revamped offense for a storied NFL franchise loaded with talent and experience. However, there’s one large problem. You’re the quarterback for the Chicago Bears.

Caleb was brought in to buck the trend of QB failures embattling the Bears since, well… ever. The last most successful Bears QB might be Rex Grossman, aka “Sexy Rexy” who rode the coattails of a Championship Defense and stellar Special Teams to Super Bowl XLI. Rexy had three turnovers and a passer rating of 68.3 as the Bears lost to the Colts 29-17. Or maybe the last most successful Bears QB is Jay Cutler, who owns most of the franchise passing records playing from 2009 – 2016. Some other QB names that usually get some visceral response from Bears fans include Andy Dalton, Mitchell Trubisky, Nick Foles, and Justin Fields.

Don’t Make the Same Mistake

You hate to pigeonhole franchises for having similar situations over the years, some they have control over, some they do not. You don’t want to stereotype organizations for repeating the same mistakes while trying to change. But, the Chicago Bears have made a name for themselves when it comes to incompetency at the quarterback position. The Bears need to make a concerted effort to change some things around in a hurry if they don’t want to squander an invaluable development year for Caleb Williams‘ confidence as he adapts to the speed and tenacity of the NFL game.

Final Thoughts

Caleb will learn and grow, and he will play better. There was already significant improvement from week 1. The playcalling will probably get better as the offensive line improves. Bears OC Shane Waldron does not fully trust his offense yet. That is wildly apparent in how he calls plays. Bears’ WR Keenan Allen is a lynchpin of this offense. Seeing him on the sidelines coaching up rookies Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze during the Texans’ game, makes you think that he might be what makes the offense go. DJ Moore looked frustrated and did not play well enough to impact the game.
