Colorado Buffaloes: Preseason Big 12 Media Poll Ranks Team Shockingly Low

Colorado Buffaloes- Shedeur Sanders

The Colorado Buffaloes football program is getting a lot of hype going into the 2024 season. With potential Heisman candidates Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, along with head coach Deion Sanders, many wonder whether the team can win the Big 12. The media is not as high on the team as some. In a preseason Big 12 media poll, the Buffaloes were ranked 11th out of 16 teams.

The poll has the Colorado Buffaloes right behind TCU and just ahead of the Baylor Bears. Media members believe Utah, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Arizona, Iowa State, West Virginia, UCF, and Texas Tech will all be better than Deion Sanders’ team. The new EA Sports video game has this team as the 16th overall team, but the media doesn’t share their excitement.

The Colorado Buffaloes finished 4-8 last year. After starting off the year winning some big games, they fell flat in the Pac-12. The offensive line problems were too much to overcome, and injuries to key players like Hunter made it difficult for the team to gain any traction. Deion Sanders has been candid about the goals for the 2024 season. He expects this team to be competing for a College Football Playoff spot now that it has expanded to 12 teams.

What’s Realistic?

Obviously Deion Sanders is going to say this team can make the College Football Playoff. This is what any coach would say about their team right now. However, a bowl game should be a more realistic goal. When he was at Jackson State, Sanders made a year two leap with the team. Now that the pomp and circumstance of his first season is done, the team can have a full offseason together. Coach Prime was also able to completely remake the offensive line, which was a huge weakness last year.

The schedule isn’t kind to the Colorado Buffaloes. They start the season off against North Dakota State who is an FCS powerhouse. Then they travel to Nebraska and Colorado State which are not easy wins by any means. Once the Big 12 slate starts, they have to topple many quality programs if they are going to sniff the top of the standings.

There is no doubt Deion Sanders will use this as motivation for the team. Nothing is more powerful in sports than the “nobody believes in us” narrative. Regardless of whether this team is good or bad, they will be a fun team to watch in 2024.
