The Transfer Portal Frenzy: 5 Schools Winning the Offseason So Far
Letโs be honest: The college football “offseason” is a myth. Itโs gone. Itโs been replaced by a two-week panic attack known as the transfer portal window. We are currently smack in the middle of that chaos. The window swung open a week ago, and since then, coaches have been speed-dating through a pool of 6,200 Division I players like it’s the world’s most stressful episode ofย The Bachelor.
The timeline is compressed, the stakes are absurdly high, and sleep is apparently optional. But amidst the madness of daily commitments and de-commitments, a few programs have actually managed to look like they have a plan.
Some are reloading for a title run, others are trying to save their jobs, and a few are just looting their old rosters like theyโre moving out of a dorm room. Here are ten programs that have navigated the early insanity and come out smelling like roses for the 2026 season.
Indiana Continues the Cignetti Magic
If you thought Curt Cignetti was a one-hit wonder, think again. The man has a blueprint, and he sticks to it. Last year, he turned Fernando Mendoza into a Heisman winner who transferred from the transfer portal. This year? Heโs reloading the chamber.
The Hoosiers have snagged 12 commits, and the headliner is TCU quarterback Josh Hoover out of the transfer portal. This kid has started 31 games and has an absolute cannon. If Cignetti can get him to stop throwing the ball to the other team occasionally, Indianaโs offense is going to be a problem. They also grabbed Nick Marsh from Michigan Stateโa guy who took one look at Bloomington and decided he wanted to catch touchdowns there.
Texas Tech is Done Being Cute
Joey McGuire isn’t here to participate; heโs here to take over. After a Big 12 title in 2025, the Red Raiders could have rested on their laurels. Instead, they went head-hunting.Beating out Lane Kiffin for quarterback Brendan Sorsby is a flex. Itโs a statement.
Sorsby was the top prize in the portal, and heโs heading to Lubbock. Pair him with a revamped defensive line that includes Wake Forestโs Mateen Ibirogba, and you realize Tech isn’t treating their championship like a flukeโtheyโre treating it like the new standard.
Penn State Becomes “Iowa State East”
New head coach Matt Campbell looked at the Penn State roster, saw a few holes, and decided to call his old friends. And by “old friends,” I mean nearly the entire starting lineup from Iowa State.Itโs actually impressive. Campbell has 29 commits, and a huge chunk are Cyclones following him to Happy Valley.
Weโre talking 13 starters, including quarterback Rocco Becht. Itโs a bold strategy, basically transplanting a team culture across state lines, but if anyone can pull off a roster flip this fast, itโs Campbell. Itโs going to be weird seeing that many guys learning where the creamery is all at once.
Ole Miss Refuses to Rebuild
Pete Golding is cooking in Oxford. The Rebels needed defensive help, and they didn’t waste time. Snagging Jay Crawford from Auburn and Keaton Thomas from Baylor instantly upgrades the spine of that defense.
But the real win here isn’t just who came inโitโs who stayed. Convincing eight starters to ignore the portal sirens and run it back? Thatโs the best recruiting job of the cycle. Golding is building a fortress, not a turnstile.
Texas A&M is Buying Groceries (The Big Ones)
Mike Elko clearly believes that games are won in the trenches, and he went shopping for beef. The Aggies brought in four SEC starting offensive linemen. Four. That is not a tweak; that is an overhaul.
They also added kicker David Olano, who has ice in his veins, and some serious defensive depth. A&M looks like a team tired of “potential” and ready for “production.” If they land Cam Coleman, go ahead and book the parade route now.
Why These Five Schools
The reason I chose these five schools is that they have all reloaded on the positions they need to take the next step. They have used the transfer portal to their advantage in gaining the right talent they need. It will be interesting to see which one of these schools takes the next step. The transfer portal has made college football more interesting.
