Texas A&M Dominates Saint Mary’s To Advance In NCAA Tournament
Texas A&M beat Saint Mary’s 63–50 last night. Being the tenth-ranked seed, the Aggies controlled the game in every direction and did not slow down their speed against the seventh-seeded Gaels. They proved their defensive strength and physical play. This game was played at Paycom Center in Oklahoma.
First Half: Aggies Take Control
Texas A&M has established the tone right from the beginning with an aggressive defensive style. The Aggies used a 10-second violation to make Saint Mary stop on their first possession and immediately caused havoc, resulting in several early turnovers.
The Aggies got off to a 9-0 start, and the Gaels did not score for more than four minutes. This aggression put Saint Mary’s on its back foot, and they were not able to recover.
Even though Saint Mary’s narrowed the margin to 23-22, the Aggies responded with a powerful surge to take over the game. The surge was ignited by Ruben Dominguez, who hit two three-pointers in rapid succession, and Zach Clemence, who had come out with an important three-pointer in the last moments of the half. This late push helped the Aggies carry a 37–26 lead into the break.
The first period was characterized by Rashaun Agee and Dominguez being the top scorers (11 points each) to ensure the offense remained effective.
Second Half: Sustaining the Lead
The aggression from Texas A&M did not stop, guaranteeing that Saint Mary‘s never had a chance to come back. The Aggies opened the second half with an 11–3 run, highlighted by a Jamie Vinson alley-oop dunk that significantly extended their lead.
Though there was a moment in the middle of the half when the Aggies temporarily lost their offensive rhythm, their defensive discipline was not lost. Saint Mary’s tried to make a comeback, and Joshua Dent headed a 9-1 run to reduce the margin to 12 points. But the Gaels could never bring the deficit down to single digits at any point.
The physical presence of Aggies in the paint was decisive. They outscored Saint Mary’s 28-12 in the paint and negated the size of the Gaels. They held the lead during the last minutes of 1st half. In the second half, Texas A&M finally beat Saint Mary 26-24 and clinched an easy win.
Key Performers For Texas A&M
Agee had a brilliant performance. He was the highest scorer, with 22 points and 9 rebounds. His paint presence was the key factor in the Aggies success on both ends of the floor.
Ruben Dominguez scored 11 points and gave the game the much-needed momentum, especially by making his three-point shot in the first half. Zach Clemence also contributed something worthy, and his three-pointer late in the first half was a decisive factor in helping the Aggies hold onto their lead.
Conclusion
Their ability to withstand defensive and physical pressure, as well as to stay calm under pressure, was emphasized when Texas A&M won wire-to-wire. The Aggies secured their place in the next round by controlling the tempo and capitalizing on Saint Mary’s mistakes.
