South Carolina Player Files Complaint Against Texas Trooper
South Carolina football player Oscar Adaway III filed a complaint against a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper following a confrontation during the Nov. 15 game against Texas A&M at Kyle Field. Here’s why.
South Carolina Player Files Complaint
Attorney Keith Jackson, who is representing Adaway III, said the complaint was originally filed on Dec. 12 with the Texas A&M Police Department. When asked why he feels it’s important to take up representation of Adaway, Jackson said, “Because of the level of accountability that is required with the flagrant actions taken.”
The incident, which was captured on national television, showed the trooper appearing to elbow his way through the South Carolina running back and his teammate, wide receiver Nyck Harbor, after a touchdown.
The trooper was relieved of his duties after the game. Jackson confirmed a complaint was filed, although the trooper’s identity remains unknown. He said part of the strategy in filing this complaint is to uncover the trooper’s identity.
“In addition to him taking accountability for his flagrant actions against my client, in doing so, in filing this claim, we expect his name to be divulged to us as we pursue this matter,” said Jackson.
South Carolina Player’s Outlook
Adaway’s performance on the field as a South Carolina running back is widely regarded. Adaway had 140 yards, 41 carries, one touchdown, and a 3.4 average for the 2025 NCAA season. However, the Nov. 15 incident drew attention not only to him but also to his safety and the actions of law enforcement during public events.
He and his family alleged significant emotional distress as a result. CBS Austin previously spoke to Attorney Craig Greaves. Greaves said, “I think the trooper needs to be held responsible.” He added, “I still have not figured out any justification for his actions.” Greaves found it annoying that the trooper’s identity remains unknown.
Greaves also believed the trooper should’ve apologized immediately after the incident.
The incident’s attention appeared to prompt the Texas Department of Public Safety, which said it has no comment on the matter.
Final Thoughts
Keith Jackson said of the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office, “I have not received confirmation as to where they are with regard to pursuing a misdemeanor assault claim or whatever the complaint may be against the officer.”
The Brazos County District Attorney’s Office hasn’t responded to inquiries regarding the complaint. However, the incident already gave Texas A&M and the Texas Department of Public Safety a bad name in the court of public opinion.
I believe in presumptive innocence, but the incident was captured on national television. This public act drew attention from fans, the media, and even professional athletes such as LeBron James. Adaway and Jackson have a right to file a complaint against the trooper, which might include a misdemeanor assault claim.
