Saint Mary’s College is entering a new era. After a successful season, the longtime head coach of the men’s basketball team, Randy Bennett, took the position at Arizona State University to replace Bobby Hurley. The announcement will end one of the most successful coaching careers in program history.

End Of a Remarkable 25-Year Run

Randy Bennett leaves Saint Mary’s with the most wins in the history of the program, with a record of 589–228, and has made the Gaels a force to be reckoned with in college basketball. In his 25 years, he had led the program to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, making Saint Mary‘s a perennial competitor and a nationally recognized program.

His continued success was also honored through the seven-time award of West Coast Conference (WCC) Coach of the Year. It demonstrates his excellence over several seasons.

A Difficult Decision To Move On

In a statement addressing his departure, Bennett acknowledged the emotional weight of leaving a program he helped build from the ground up for years. He described the decision as a difficult one, given the strong bond he had developed with the school and its community over the years.

He was thankful to have been assigned to lead the team. He pointed out that the school had been his second home during his career. He also highlighted how he enjoyed the connections that he had made in his stay with the Gaels. He remarked that he would miss the place and the people who made his stay so valuable.

Heritage More than Wins and Losses

The leadership at Saint Mary’s honored the contribution of Bennett and highlighted that his contribution went way beyond the basketball court. College President Roger Thompson described Randy Bennett as more than just a head coach, considering him a builder, mentor, and a key figure in shaping the team’s identity.

Thompson focused on the fact that Randy Bennett took the men’s basketball team to a new level. He made the team a nationally respected program not only due to their competitive achievements but also due to their integrity, teamwork, and discipline. He also mentioned that the culture that Bennett established brought together generations of players, students, and fans.

Randy Bennett Brings Stability To Arizona State

Randy Bennett introduces a high-efficiency, systematized approach to Arizona State, based on a disciplined approach that prioritizes shot quality over speed. As an established program builder with a 25-year record, he is a master at finding and leveraging under-the-radar talent, namely via a global recruiting program in Australia and Europe.

Moreover, he is a Mesa native and, therefore, can restore the relationship with the Arizona high school basketball community immediately and revive the NIL and booster support of the school. That would give the Sun Devils the stability and tactical identity they have never had in the Big 12 world.

Transition and What Lies Ahead

The departure of Bennett has left Saint Mary’s with the challenge of carrying on with the momentum that Bennett had set. The announcement of the new head coach is expected soon.

In the meantime, Randy Bennett is facing a new challenge at Arizona State. He will seek to apply his experience and track record in a new setting. This news is a crucial moment for Saint Mary’s.
