Mount St. Mary’s was no match for Ohio State in men’s basketball as they lost last night 113-60. Mount St. Mary’s was not tall enough to match up with the Buckeyes, who are now 6-0 for the first time since 2019-2020. The Buckeyes completely outclassed the Mountaineers, who were an NCAA Tournament team last season.

In this game, John Mobley Jr. scored 26 points, a season high, and the Buckeyes had five players in double figures. Those five players were: Ivan Njegovan, Bruce Thornton, Christoph Tilly, Devin Royal, and Mobley Jr. Ohio State shot 41-of-64 from the field, which is 64% to bury Mount St. Mary’s. This game between Mount St. Mary’s and Ohio State was a lot of the Buckeyes and a little of the Mountaineers. In terms of a scoring summary, the Buckeyes led big at halftime and pulled away from there. They won by 53.

A highlight of the landslide win was that Mobley Jr. had 26 points. A 6-0 run occurred right after. Mount St. Mary’s chipped away again, but the momentum was short-lived. Ohio State closed the first half on a 21-3 run. They led 52-26 at halftime. The second half was more of the same.

Mobley and Royal ensured the offensive outpouring continued for Ohio State to start the second half. Mobley hit a three-pointer from near the Buckeyes’ midcourt logo and nailed another midrange jumper. Royal had a rare four-point play. The Ohio State advantage grew to 69-31. Njegovan gave Ohio State some great minutes as it maintained the lead. Ohio State then pulled away, winning, 113-60 over Mount St. Mary’s.

A highlight for Mount St. Mary’s was that Luke McEldon had 19 points and 8 rebounds. Mount St. Mary’s is only 1-6, which beat American University in a First Four game last season before falling to No.1 seed Duke. Mount St. Mary’s had played its last two Power Four opponents this season tough, leading Cincinnati by six at halftime and taking Maryland to overtime.

  • Thornton has continued his climb up Ohio State’s all-time assists leaderboard this season. Now he stands at No. 6 in program history with 431 for his career.
  • Ohio State is now 3-0 in the series.
  • Tilly sustained an injury near the end of the first half and had to exit for the rest of the game. Ohio State did not need him. He reappeared with a warm-up shirt over his jersey, cooling down on an exercise bike as he laughed and smiled before returning to the Ohio State bench. Head Coach Jake Diebler stated after the game that it was a lower-body injury, but his absence in the second half was “mostly precautionary.”
  • In addition to Njegovan and Mobley’s career-highs, Taison Chatman posted a career-high nine points.

Conclusion

Ohio State (6-0) is off to its best start since beginning the 2019-20 season when they started 9-0. The Buckeyes play at Pittsburgh on Friday. Things are about to get tougher for the Buckeyes. Ohio State will now play five straight games against high-major competition with just one game against a mid-major foe still on the calendar.
