James Madison Loses 14-1 To Virginia Tech In a Non-Conference Baseball Game

James Madison loses to rival Virginia Tech

James Madison fell behind early and lost a non-conference baseball game to rival Virginia Tech. The Dukes were wild in the very first inning, and were losing 7-0 after just two innings. They went on to lose this game 14-1. As they have been struggling this season, this game was right in line with expectations for the Dukes.

James Madison Starting Pitcher Adam Horvath pitched only a third of an inning. In that third of an inning, he allowed two earned runs, walked two hitters, and threw a wild pitch. He was quickly removed, but things did not really get better for Madison, as their second pitcher, Griffin Madden, pitched only one inning. He allowed four runs and walked three. His earned run average is now 10.39. Do you think JMU will be able to turn things around?

James Madison lost this game to Virginia Tech 12-.1. The defeat started with JMU falling behind 7-0 after just two innings. They used two pitchers, walked five, and threw one wild pitch. They scored a run in the third inning, but the game was already over for all intents and purposes. JMU was losing 7-1.

The game was tied at this score through the fifth inning, when Virginia Tech scored two more runs. The Hokies scored three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning. The final tally was 14-1 in their favor.

Early Wildness

It is difficult for a baseball team to dig out of a hole. James Madison was in one after just two innings. They were losing 7-0, and in the first two innings, their pitchers combined to walk five and throw a wild pitch. The Dukes had five hits in the loss.

The team was behind the eight ball right away, and it is hard to win when that happens. It must be difficult for the JMU players psychologically to fall behind early and know they were likely to lose another baseball game. With the loss, JMU fell to 18-25 on the season. Virginia Tech improved to three games over .500 at 23-20.

Familiar Foes

These two teams are state rivals, so even though the teams are from different conferences, there is meaning to these games. As neighbors, these teams play every season. They have already played this season, a win for the Hokies. You have to think that the players on each team want to win the game against the other. With a history of a Hokie win, the outcome of this game was never really in doubt.

Fantastic Performances

With just one run scored and in giving up 14 runs, there were really no stars for James Madison. That was not the case for the Hokies. Ethan Ball was 1-for-2 with a home run and three runs batted in. Nick Locurto was 3-of-5, and he also had three runs batted in. Owen Petrich, Pete Daniel, and Ethan Gibson also had two hits.

On the pitching side, Virginia Tech used five pitchers. Combined, none of them had outstanding statistics, but they did combine to hold Madison to one run. The pitchers for Virginia Tech were Madden Clement, Brody Roe, Brendan Yagesh, Luke Craytor, and Danny Lazaro. They deserve credit, as they held a good hitting team down.
