Georgia Bulldogs Hold Off the Florida Gators
The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs walked into EverBank Stadium on Saturday as heavy favorites, and for a while, it looked like they might walk out with an upset loss tattooed on their foreheads. Instead, they clawed their way to a 24-20 victory over the Florida Gators in a game that had more twists than a pretzel factory.
Georgia’s Fourth Quarter Heroics Save the Day
Let’s be real: Georgia looked shaky for three quarters. Gunner Stockton was inconsistent, completing just 9 of 20 passes for 223 yards with a touchdown and a pick that had Bulldogs fans reaching for the antacids. The offense sputtered. The defense bent. And for a moment, it felt like the Gators might actually pull off the unthinkable.
Then the fourth quarter happened.
Redshirt freshman Chauncey Bowens decided he’d had enough of the drama. With 4:36 left on the clock, Bowens exploded for a career-long 36-yard touchdown run that put Georgia back on top 24-20. Suddenly, the vibes shifted. The panic subsided. And Kirby Smart’s squad remembered who they were.
But Bowens wasn’t done flexing. Earlier in the game, he also punched in a short touchdown, finishing the day with 70 yards on just nine carries. Not bad for a guy who probably wasn’t on most fans’ radar before kickoff.
Defense Steps Up When It Matters Most
Georgia’s defense had been getting gashed all game, but when the pressure was on, they rose to the occasion—twice. First, with 7:54 remaining, Florida went for it on 4th and 1 at the Georgia 18-yard line. The Bulldogs stuffed Running Back Jadan Baugh, turning the ball over on downs and giving the offense a chance to take the lead.
Then, with just over three minutes left and Florida desperately trying to march down the field, Georgia’s defense came up clutch again. The Gators turned it over on downs for the second time, and that was all she wrote. Stockton kneeled out the clock, and the Bulldogs escaped Jacksonville with their dignity and their winning streak intact.
Costly Injuries and Standout Performances
The win didn’t come without a price. Georgia lost Defensive Lineman Jordan Hall to a leg injury during the game, and he was ruled out for the remainder. That’s a tough blow for a defense that’s already dealing with plenty of attrition this season.
On the bright side, junior receiver Zacharia Branch had himself a day, hauling in 10 catches for 112 yards. He was Stockton’s security blanket when things got dicey, and his 18-yard grab on a critical third down late in the game was the kind of play championship teams make.
Safety J.K. Bolden also had a rough afternoon, getting ejected in the first half for targeting. Not ideal when you’re trying to slow down a scrappy Florida offense.
What This Win Means For Georgia
With the victory, Georgia improves to 7-1 on the season and extends their dominance over Florida. Smart is now 8-2 all-time against the Gators, and his record against Florida, Auburn, and Georgia Tech sits at an absurd 27-4. The last time Florida beat Georgia? 2020. Ancient history at this point.
This also marks Georgia’s 46th consecutive win over an unranked opponent. Sure, the Bulldogs haven’t been flashy this year, but they keep finding ways to win—and that’s what separates good teams from great ones.
Next up? Mississippi State at noon ET next Saturday. Hopefully, Georgia can clean things up and avoid another heart attack in the fourth quarter.
