Joshua Jefferson Injury Overshadows Iowa State’s Dominant Win Over Tennessee State

Iowa State Cyclones forward Joshua Jefferson (5) is helped off of the court

Iowa State easily defeated Tennessee State 108–74 in the first round of the 2026 NCAA tournament, but the victory was marred by an injury to star Forward Joshua Jefferson. The All-American exited early in the first half with a left ankle issue, leaving his availability for the remainder of the tournament uncertain.

Joshua Jefferson’s Injury

Jefferson spent a few minutes in the game before he had to leave. The 6-foot-9 senior needed the help of trainers to get off the floor. He subsequently came back to the bench on crutches and with his ankle in a protective boot.

His absence is a major worry to the Cyclones, and he has been their best player. He has been a key contributor in scoring while also leading the team in rebounds throughout the season.

Cyclones Respond with Dominant Run

Although Iowa State lost one of its main players early, it immediately recovered and dominated the game. The first half of the game went on to give them a 23-0 run, which changed the game’s course. Nate Heise was at the center stage in this period with 8 of his 23 points in the opening half.

The Cyclones managed to stretch their lead to 55-29 at halftime. Their attacking performance and defense were overwhelming for Tennessee State. In the absence of Jefferson, Iowa State got impressive performances from some players. Killyan Toure (freshman) also gave a performance to remember, as he posted career highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Milan Momcilovic contributed 17 points.

Blake Buchanan also had a nice game, as he was left with 11 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists. His versatility might gain more relevance should Jefferson fail to resume playing in the next games.

Tennessee State’s Effort Not Enough

Tennessee State cut into the deficit with the help of Aaron Nkrumah, who scored 21 points. Antoine Lorick III added 20 points, and Travis Harper II came in with 13. Nevertheless, the Tigers were unable to match the intensity and depth of Iowa State. Another controversial aspect of the game was the case of Tennessee State’s Kavien Jones, who was ejected due to a Flagrant 2 foul.

A Tough Test Awaits

Iowa State is now moving on to play Kentucky in the next round after the Wildcats overcame Santa Clara in overtime. The game is a great challenge, particularly given that it is not clear how Jefferson will recover.

Historically, the Cyclones have struggled against Kentucky. They had lost all three of their previous games, including two in NCAA Tournament action. As the injuries start to mount, the Cyclones will have to pull together and rebound.

Though Iowa State dominated, the fact that Jefferson got injured throws a dark cloud over the team. The Cyclones must adjust to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
