College Football Playoff Rankings 12/2/2025
The College Football Playoff rankings were announced tonight for the week af December 2, 2025. The top two teams in the poll remained the same after they both had big victories. However, Texas A&M, which was third, lost (they fell to number 7 in the college football playoff).
So, Georgia assumed the number three ranking. The rankings for the College Football Playoff tonight were revealed shortly before the college basketball game between Duke and Florida. Do you think that the games this coming weekend will determine the College Football Playoff rankings?
College Football Playoff Rankings
Ohio State stayed atop the rankings. Indiana also remained at number two. Those two teams will face each other in the Big Ten Conference Championship Game. Texas A&M lost, so Georgia moved up to number three. Texas Tech was number four, and Oregon, yet another Big Ten Conference team, was number five. Ole Miss, Texas A&M (following the loss), and Oklahoma rounded out the top eight. Alabama was number nine, followed by Notre Dame, BYU, and Miami.
The conference championship games will pit several of these teams against each other. Therefore, they will be crucial. The College Football Playoff Committee has said it wants the conference championship games to be important. They got their wish, big time, this season. In a sense, because there are so many contests between highly ranked teams, these College Football Playoff Committee results are somewhat less important than the rankings next week.
It is interesting to look at the teams that are just out and see if they have much of a chance. The three-loss Texas team, which was the preseason number one, sits in the number thirteen spot. They need someone ranked just above them to lose. Vanderbilt, number fourteen, is in a similar spot.
College Football Playoff Committee
It is a good thing to be reminded who comprises the College Football Playoff Committee, since these upcoming playoff games will be multi-million-dollar events. University presidents and chancellors from all 10 FBS conferences, along with Notre Dame, serve on the board of managers and govern administrative operations.
A group of 13 people with experience as coaches, student-athletes, college administrators, and journalists, along with some athletics directors, make up the selection committee. Members of the committee are Chris Ault, Troy Dannen, Mark Dantonio, Jeff Long, Ivan Maisel, Chris Massaro, Mack Rhoades (chair), Mike Riley, David Sayler, Wesley Walls, Carla Williams, and Hunter Yurachek.
Format
Twelve teams make the College Football Playoff. The conference champions get a bye in the first round of the playoffs, so there is some bonus to winning those conference championship games. The quarterfinals will be the Cotton, Rose, Sugar, and Orange Bowls. The semifinals will be in the Fiesta and Peach Bowls. The CFP will have its championship game on January 25 in Las Vegas.
One controversial topic is how many teams from each conference will qualify. With huge conferences in the Big Ten and Southeastern, it is difficult for teams from other conferences to make it. One particular conference that generates a lot of discussion in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The ACC seems to be a bit snake-bitten by the committee. They are disadvantaged every year.
Conclusion
The college football playoff will generate millions of dollars. With teams off between their conference championship games and their bowl games, it is a good bet that the college football playoff will expand. The teams around the current cutline of 12th are under immense pressure. They must win to move up, and they cannot lose. Texas, the former number one-ranked team, is in the first-out number 13 spot.
