Catholic University Women Do Something Not Done Since 1991
Catholic University ran in the 2025 NCAA Regionals today in Salem, Virginia. The Catholic University men did not qualify for the NCAA Championships in South Carolina, but for the first time since 1991, the Catholic University had 2 women qualify for the NCAA Championship.
The Catholic University men finished in ninth place out of 24 teams. The Catholic University women finished fourth of 26 teams. The performance of the Women’s team was spectacular. How do you think Catholic University will do at the NCAA Championship?
Catholic University Runs in the NCAA Regionals
Entry was restricted to the top seven men and women in the Southeastern NCAA Championship. The meet was held on the campus of Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. The top finishers in the race (both individual and team) qualified for the NCAA Championship in South Carolina on November 22.
In the men’s race, Joe Wolfe, a senior, was the top finisher again for the Cardinals. Wolfe ran 25:53.20 and came in 31st place in the race. Michael Brunet, a freshman, ran a 26.05.20. He came in 38th place. Joseph Locke, a junior, finished in a time of 36.32.60. He finished in 50th place.
Tim Brown, a freshman, finished with a time of 26:56.80. He finished in 62nd place. Tim Sweeney, a freshman, was the next best runner for Catholic, competing in the 8 KM race for the first time with a time of 27:15.20. He finished in 77th place.
The non-scorers for Catholic University finished in 84th and 87th place. Richard Harrington, a junior, finished in a time of 27:25.70. He finished in 84th place. Patrick Morris, a sophomore, finished in a time of 27:33.20. He finished in 87th place.
Not Since 1991
The women had an outstanding race for Catholic University, finishing in fourth place overall. They had two individual runners qualify for the NCAA Championship. That is the first time that has happened since 1991!
In the women’s 6-kilometer race, the Cardinals finished fourth overall. Freshman Olivia Sobkowicz finished the race in 21.56.20. She finished in eighth place. Junior Laurel McMahon finished next, fifth overall in 22.15.40. She finished in 13th place. Both of the runners qualified for the NCAA Championship.
Alexa Grassi, a junior, finished in 23:36.50. She finished in forty-second place. Bridgid Cavanaugh, a freshman, finished in 24:13.20. She finished in 55th place. Catherine Lorelle, a sophomore, finished in 24:26.57. She finished in sixty-fourth place.
The non-scoring women for Catholic University were both. Mia LaMarra was next in a time of 25.43.00. She finished in ninety-eighth place. Erin Roche, a freshman, ran a time of 25:49:40. She came in 101st place.
Conclusion
The NCAA Championship is next for the two women runners from Catholic University. The race is on November 22 in South Carolina. The runners were excited that the two qualifiers were clearly concentrating on qualifying for the National Championship. Head Coach Steve Rahn said he missed the meet because of a medical situation. So, Distance coach JT Klopcic was in charge.
He spent the last three seasons as the Associate Head Coach of Cross Country and Track & Field at nearby Goucher College. Klopcic also worked as an Assistant Track Coach with Under Armour over the past year.
He said, “Both the men’s and women’s side had good days to cap a successful 2025 season. Both teams worked together really well and executed really well. I’m really excited for the future of the program and continue to elevate our success. The group is young and eager for success.”
