Auburn Greatness: Cam Newton’s #2 Jersey Will Be Retired
When many think of the greatest season the Auburn Tigers football team ever had, the 2010 season is definitely on the list. Especially with how unstoppable Cam Newton was as the starting quarterback for the university. His play at Auburn secured him a Heisman Trophy and the university winning the SEC Championship. After many long years, it is official, his number will be retired at Auburn.
Cam Newton’s Stats and Accomplishments At Auburn
Newton was electrifying during his time at Auburn. He put up some really strong stats, including 2,854 passing yards, 30 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 1,473 rushing yards, and 20 rushing touchdowns. It was a generational season not seen before. He helped Auburn win the SEC Championship Game and become one of the best teams in the country. He also won the Heisman Trophy in 2010 in a landslide victory. Newton received 729 of the 883 first-place votes that year. That is insanely impressive.
Newton’s Reaction To the News
When this got revealed, many wondered how Newton would react to it. He put out a statement, and he was super positive about the announcement, saying the following: “Auburn will always be home to me… The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired alongside legends like Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Terry Beasley is an incredible honor that I’ll cherish forever. War Eagle!”
It is clear that he views this as a dream come true, and it’s hard not to see why. He probably does not become a franchise QB without that amazing year at Auburn.
When Will the Retirement Ceremony Be At Auburn?
In regard to when the ceremony will happen, the date is October 11, 2025. The Auburn Tigers will be facing the Georgia Bulldogs, which is the perfect time to do it. These teams are rivals. The entire ceremony is likely going to take place during halftime of that game.
Final Thoughts
Newton deserves this. He is arguably the greatest football player that the university has ever had. There is still a debate that Bo Jackson is the greatest, but Newton is definitely in consideration. The man himself did not come across well during the whole eligibility scandal, but he deserves to have his jersey retired at Auburn due to his contributions.
At least this is reality and not that Dolphins rumor that happened years ago. For fans of Newton and the Auburn Tigers, his jersey getting retired will be enjoyable.
