Jerrod Calhoun Returns to Cincinnati to Lead New Era
Jerrod Calhoun is set to begin a new chapter as the head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats, bringing his experience and deep ties to the program full circle. Having amassed his resume at various rungs of the collegiate basketball ladder, Calhoun is now at the helm of a team that needs to regain its status among the top teams in the country.
Advantages Of Early Cincinnati Basketball
Jerrod Calhoun is, so far as concerns Cincinnati, related by college. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2004 as a student assistant to legendary coach Bob Huggins during the 2003-04 season. The experience at that age contributed to his coaching philosophy.
He would then come back to West Virginia University in 2007 and serve five seasons on staff before 2012, when he rejoined Huggins. During that period, the Mountaineers made an impressive run to the 2010 Final Four, giving Jerrod Calhoun valuable exposure to top-level competition.
Huggins was also there when Calhoun was introduced. He also received a standing ovation, which highlights his continued impact on the show. Jerrod Calhoun said that his former mentor, Huggins, is regarded by many as one of the best practice coaches he has ever met.
Established Record As A Head Coach
Jerrod Calhoun has 14 years of experience as a head coach and a record of 297-159. He entered the head coaching business with Fairmont State Falcons at the Division II level, where he had five successful seasons.
Then he moved to Youngstown State Penguins, where he led the program for the next seven years. The team won five intense seasons under his leadership, the first at the Division I level for the school.
Calhoun most recently coached the Utah State Aggies, with a record of 55-15 in his two seasons. With 29 wins and 7 losses in their most recent season, the Aggies won both the regular-season and tournament championships at the Mountain West and made it to the Round of 32 at the NCAA Tournament.
Building For The Future
Cincinnati athletic director John Cunningham also stressed the need to find the right leader to shepherd the program. He mentioned that the coaching search process can be complicated, yet they were looking for a candidate who knows the program’s tradition, expectations, and competitive advantage.
Calhoun has been inheriting an unstable team over the past few years. The last time the Bearcats went to the NCAA Tournament was in 2019, and they are currently in their third head coach since Mick Cronin left to join the UCLA Bruins.
Influence Of Recruiting Approach And Mentorship
In the future, Jerrod Calhoun emphasized the need to develop existing players and explore the possibilities in the transfer portal. He said that the program is being built upon the current roster, but that the staff will proactively seek the best talent around the country.
Calhoun also credited Cronin as a key factor in his decision to go back. He said that Cronin was a mentor whose faith in his coaching style and vision of Cincinnati helped in taking up the job.
With Calhoun replacing Wes Miller, who had a 100-74 record in five seasons before heading to Charlotte 49ers, the expectations are obvious. Stability is only one aim, but restoring national relevance to one of the proud programs of college basketball.
