UNC Star Caleb Wilson Suffers Season-Ending Injury
Just when it looked like Caleb Wilson was about to make his triumphant return to the court, his right thumb had other plans. The North Carolina Tar Heels confirmed Friday that he fractured his right thumb during a non-contact drill in Thursday’s practice. He’s already had surgery. He won’t play again this season.
How Wilson Got Hurt
According to the school’s official announcement, Wilson broke his right thumb during a routine practice drill — specifically while dunking the basketball. No defender. No contact. Just Wilson, a rim, and the cruelest kind of bad luck.
This is the second hand injury Wilson has suffered in less than a month. He had already been sidelined since Feb. 10 after fracturing his left hand in a loss at Miami. Coach Hubert Davis had been carefully monitoring the star’s recovery, noting that he was “progressing” and getting back into individual workouts. He was finally cleared for light activity last week. Then Thursday happened.
What Wilson Meant to the Tar Heels
Wilson wasn’t just North Carolina’s best player. He was their entire offensive ecosystem. The former five-star recruit and No. 5 overall prospect in his class was putting together one of the most impressive freshman seasons in UNC history. He averaged 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting a ridiculous 57.8% from the field. He scored in double figures in all 24 games he played.
He set a program record for 20-point games by a freshman with 17. He earned National Player of the Week honors twice and ACC Freshman of the Week three times.
How UNC Looks Without Wilson
The Tar Heels have gone 5-1 in games without Wilson since his first injury in February. That’s a legitimately impressive record and proof that this roster has more depth than people give it credit for. North Carolina currently sits at 24-6 overall and 12-5 in the ACC, locked into the No. 4 seed at next week’s conference tournament. They still have talent. They still have fight.
But let’s be honest about the math here. BetMGM moved UNC’s national title odds from 80-1 all the way out to 150-1 following Friday’s news. That’s not a subtle signal. Without Wilson, the Tar Heels go from “dangerous sleeper” to “respectable tournament team.” Those are two very different things when March is on the line.
It’s worth noting that UNC hasn’t won more than one game in the NCAA Tournament since the 2021-22 season. Getting deeper without their leading scorer, rebounder, and passer? That just got a whole lot harder.
What’s Next For Wilson and the NBA Draft
The good news is that his draft stock appears to be largely intact. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Wilson is expected to be cleared for basketball activities during the NBA predraft process, putting him right on track to compete for the No. 1 overall pick in the June draft.
Most scouts and front office executives still have Wilson ranked inside the top four or five prospects in the class, sitting just behind Darryn Peterson, AJ Dybantsa, and Cameron Boozer on most big boards.
The Bigger Picture
Saturday’s regular-season finale at Cameron Indoor Stadium against No. 1 Duke now carries a completely different feeling. It was supposed to be Wilson’s coming-out party on the biggest stage in college basketball. Instead, it’ll be the Tar Heels playing for pride, momentum, and tournament seeding. His season is done. The memories he made at Chapel Hill are not going anywhere.
