Arkansas Razorbacks Edge Out Vanderbilt Commodores to Win 2026 SEC Tournament Championship

The Arkansas Razorbacks celebrate after the men's SEC Conference Tournament Championship against the Vanderbilt Commodores.

There’s a new king of the SEC this season, and their name is Arkansas, as the Razorbacks marched into Nashville and beat out tough teams like the Vanderbilt Commodores to take home the 2026 SEC tournament championship for the first time in 26 years.

Darius Acuff Jr. Cements Himself as an Arkansas Legend

When looking at the current freshman class that has taken this college basketball season by storm in terms of pure dominance, it’s hard to argue that Razorbacks superstar first-year Darius Acuff Jr. isn’t near the top of that list. Acuff Jr. put together a magnificent SEC as he averaged 30 points and 8 assists per game while shooting 50% from three-point range to both lead the Razorbacks to SEC glory, while also stacking his trophy case further with the SEC tournament Most Outstanding Player award.

That SEC tournament performance from Acuff Jr. comes as little surprise, as he already cemented himself as the best player in the SEC this season. Acuff Jr. also took home the SEC Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year awards earlier this week, becoming just the third player in conference history to win both of those awards in the same season. Acuff Jr. is also widely expected to snag some national awards as well, as he’s currently the favorite to win the Bob Cousy award as well.

Razorbacks Offense Stays Hot While Commodores Go Cold in the Second Half

Despite the Commodores giving the Razorbacks a good fight in the second half of the game to stay within striking distance, Arkansas’s offense proved too good to stop down the stretch. The Razorbacks would end the game shooting a scorching 52% from the field as well as 63% from three-point range. Arkansas’s defense also made a rare appearance in the win, as they held Vanderbilt to just 38% shooting from the field and 42% from three for the game.

While Acuff Jr. served as the engine that drove the Arkansas offense to victory, the Razorbacks also got another key performance from senior forward, Trevon Brazile, in the win today. Brazile would finish with a near double-double of 16 points and 9 rebounds while also making an impact on the defensive end by adding in 2 blocks and 2 steals to boot. Brazile was masterful in his final SEC tournament, as he averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Razorbacks three games.

For the Commodores, their offensive production was sparser, as only 3 players finished in double figures in the loss. The star of the show on offense for Vanderbilt was Duke Miles, who had a great performance in the game. Miles finished with 19 points while also dishing out 9 assists. Miles’ backcourt teammate, Tyler Tanner, would struggle mightily in the loss, as he scored 15 points on just 3 for 15 shooting from the field in the game.

John Calipari Makes SEC History with Latest Tournament Title

After dominating the SEC during his 15-year tenure leading the Kentucky Wildcats, the king of the SEC, John Calipari, now sits on the throne once again. After defeating the Commodores to take home his 7th SEC tournament championship overall, Calipari also became the first head coach to lead multiple SEC schools to a conference tournament championship, a feat befitting the legendary Hall of Fame head coach.

Arkansas and Vanderbilt Expected to Snag High Seeds in the NCAA Tournament

With the conference tournament nearly wrapped up, and Selection Sunday set to release this year’s March Madness bracket in a few hours, both teams will, in all likelihood, get a favorable seed heading into next week. Coming into the game, the Razorbacks were projected to get a number five seed, while the Commodores were projected as a number four seed for the big dance.

The SEC as a whole is expected to have plenty of teams in this year’s tournament, with 8 teams projected to make it in, according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi’s latest bracketology. The only odd man out for the SEC when it comes to March Madness is Texas, which is currently projected as a first-four in for the tournament. If the Longhorns can win their first-four game, the SEC will officially have 9 teams in the NCAA tournament this year, the most out of any conference.
