Arizona Clings to No. 1 in AP Poll, But Michigan Is Breathing Down Their Necks
Arizona barely kept its grip on the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 menโs college basketball poll on Monday. We’re talking razor-thin margins here, folks. The Arizona Wildcats edged out fast-charging Michigan by a single point. Thatโs it. One lonely point. Itโs one of the tightest races for the top spot weโve seen in the pollโs 78-year history, and frankly, it feels like the basketball gods are setting us up for some serious drama.
The Arizona Wildcats snagged 32 first-place votes to finish with 1,494 points. Meanwhile, the Wolverines, who have been playing like theyโre mad at the rim, grabbed the other 29 first-place votes. A tie at No. 1 has only happened once, way back in 1981 between Oregon State and Virginia.
Arizona has been sitting pretty at the top for five straight polls, but Michigan isnโt just knocking on the door; theyโre trying to kick it down. The Wolverines are fresh off a 96-66 demolition of USC. That win made them the first team in the poll era to beat three ranked opponents by at least 30 points apiece. Dusty Mayโs squad is looking scary good.
The Rest Of the Heavy Hitters
The top six didn’t budge this week. Youโve got Arizona and Michigan at the top, followed by undefeated Iowa State, the juggernaut that is UConn, Purdue, and Duke.
Houston leapfrogged Gonzaga and BYU to land at No. 7, but the real story here is Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are 14-0 and sitting at No. 10. This is their first time cracking the top 10 since 1966. For context, The Beatles were still touring the last time Nebraska was this high in the rankings. They just won a grimy 58-56 slugfest against Michigan State, extending their winning streak to 18 games dating back to last season. Even Tom Izzo had to tip his cap, admitting the Huskers did a “hell of a job.”
Risers, Sliders, and New Faces
Vanderbilt is still hanging around the unbeaten club at No. 11, their highest ranking since the 2011-12 preseason. Theyโve got a massive test against No. 13 Alabama coming up, so weโll find out real quick if the Commodores are contenders or pretenders.
Iowa made the biggest jump of the week, vaulting six spots to No. 19 after taking down UCLA. On the flip side, Michigan State slid three spots to No. 12 after the loss to Nebraska. Kansas and North Carolina also took a tumble, dropping five spots each after losses to UCF and SMU, respectively. Speaking of UCF, the Knights are ranked for the first time since 2019 after upsetting Kansas. Welcome to the party, Orlando.
SMU also crashed the Top 25 at No. 24, their first appearance since 2017. They, along with UCF, booted USC and Florida out of the rankings. It is a cruel world in the Top 25, and Arizona is on top of that world.
The Conference Breakdown
The Big 12 is flexing its muscles with seven ranked teams, including four in the top 10. The Big Ten isnโt far behind with six teams, while the ACC and SEC each have five. The West Coast and Big East are holding it down with one apiece. With conference play heating up, don’t expect this poll to stay static.
