Arizona State to Part Ways with Long-Time Head Coach Bobby Hurley After 2025-26 Season
Major changes are on the way for the Arizona State Sun Devils’ Men’s Basketball program, as the school is expected to part ways with head coach Bobby Hurley after the conclusion of the season. This is according to a report by On3’s Pete Nakos, who was the first to break this news.
Hurley’s Legacy at Arizona State
After being hired back in 2015 for the head coaching position with the Sun Devils, the program saw a mixture of good and bad during Hurley’s 11-year tenure in Tempe. Hurley would lead the Sun Devils to three appearances in the NCAA tournament, getting only as far as the Round of 64 in two of those three appearances. Arizona State’s best season under Hurley would come in 2018-19, when Hurley would lead the Sun Devils to a 23-11 record and a second-place finish in the PAC-12 conference that year.
Hurley’s tenure would also be mired in plenty of on-court technical fouls and ejections, as Hurley’s fiery competitiveness would often serve as both a spark for his team and a detriment. In just his first conference game in his first season coaching the Sun Devils, Hurley would be ejected against in-state rival Arizona Wildcats, essentially setting the tone for what to expect over the next 11 years with Hurley in Tempe.
In his 11 years in the desert, Hurley has notched a 184-166 record, with those 184 wins placing Hurley at second place in total coaching wins in program history. If Hurley is unable to lead ASU on a miracle run in the Big 12 tournament later this week, this season will mark the third straight where the Sun Devils have both finished the season with a sub .500 record, as well as missing the NCAA tournament.
The Sun Devils have been on a tear down the stretch of the Big 12 regular season, as they went 4-3 during their final 7 games, with two ranked wins coming at home against No. 14 Kansas and No. 16 Texas Tech. Arizona State is scheduled to take on Baylor in the first round of the Big 12 tournament at noon on Tuesday.
What’s Next for the Sun Devils Following Hurley’s Departure
It will be quite the reset for the Sun Devils without Hurley at the helm, as the program will be looking at a total reset heading into next season. Arizona State will, in all likelihood, lose a fair number of players from its 2026 recruiting class, which means the team will have to look to the portal to retool for next season. There currently isn’t a list of head coaching candidates to replace Hurley at Arizona State at this time.
