No. 1 Luke Lilledahl from Penn State wrestled against No. 4 Nic Bouzakis of Ohio State at the 125-pound weight class. This match between undefeated wrestlers was won in overtime by Lillendahl. This was a match the Buckeyes needed to win; the Nittany Lions went up 3-0.

133 Pounds

We had another match of undefeated wrestlers in this weight class. Ohio State’s Ben Davino, ranked No. 2, went against No. 4 Marcus Blaze. This was another match that Ohio State needed, and another match they did not get. This was another match that went to sudden death. Blaze dramatically scored a takedown. Three more points for the inhabitants of “Happy Valley.”

At 141 pounds, Jesse Mendez defeated Braden Davis by technical fall.

Here was the first fill-in for Ohio State, Brogan Fielding. He had no chance against Shayne Van Ness and lost 20-4.

154 Pounds

A second Ohio State fill-in, this one named Dylan Chase, was a heavy underdog to PJ Duke. He lost the match and was pinned.

184 Pounds

Ohio State almost got a surprise at the weight class as eighth-ranked Buckeye Dylan Fishbak led for most of the match with top-ranked Rocco Welch. Welch won in the final seconds 7-6. That made it 29-5, Penn State.

197 Pounds

At 197 pounds, the top-ranked Josh Barr faced Ohio State’s tenth-ranked Luke Geog. This match was scoreless for most of the first period. However, Barr scored a takedown in the waning seconds of the first period. Barr ended up winning the match 11-2. He is now 15-0 on the season, and he has scored bonus points in every match this season.

Heaveyweight

The Barr victory left one more match for the beleaguered Buckeyes. They turned to All-American Nick Feldman. He is the third-ranked heavyweight in the country. He faced 12th-ranked Cole Mirasola, who is a redshirt freshman. This was one of the few matches in which Ohio State was favored. This match was decided in a sudden-death victory by Mirasola.

Parting Shots

The Nittany Lions have six top-ranked wrestlers. They are also very young, so they are not going anywhere. There were 16,006 fans in attendance. The largest crowd to ever see a college wrestling match.

There was a lot of attention paid to this wrestling match; it is a shame the Buckeyes could not give them a better test. However, they did wrestle with a bunch of backups. They are a little banged up and are preserving themselves for the Big Ten Championships. Ohio State suffered its first defeat of the season, as Penn State won 36-5.
