Coco Gauff Splits with Her Coach After US Open Failure

TENNIS: MAR 19 Miami Open - Coco Gauff

American tennis player Coco Gauff made a new adjustment on her team after having a tough run at the US Open. Gauff failed to defend her title at Flushing Meadows and made an early exit this year. She was beaten by her compatriot, Emma Navarro in the fourth round. The 20-year-old announced her split with coach Brad Gilbert on her social media account.

Remembering Gilbert’s Positive Impact on Gauff

The 14-month relationship between Gauff and Gilbert had led the youngster into a tennis sensation at the beginning. They started to work together in July 2023, weeks after she suffered a first-round exit at Wimbledon. Gilbert – who was also best known for working with Andy Murray, Andre Agassi, and Andy Roddick – made Gauff enjoy a sensational run of form that year.

Over the next few years, Coco Gauff started her success with titles in Washington and Cincinnati. She then claimed her first major of her career at the US Open, beating Aryna Sabalenka in New York. She marked herself in history as the first teen champion in New York since Serena Williams in 1999.

Gauff also marked her best run at the Australian and French Open 2024 as a semifinalist. She also lifted the women’s doubles title at Roland Garros. She also managed to reach a career-high ranking of No. 2. But this positive run didn’t last long after her fourth-round exit – also against Navarro. Gauff admitted she had game plan issues during her performance at Centre Court that time.

Coco Gauff and Gilbert have shown Some Signs of Cracks

Gilbert’s exit from the team is no surprise due to his role as a prominent TV pundit at the US Open. Many experts had seen it appropriate because Gilbert was still working with Gauff. He was still advising Gauff while conducting on-court interviews and providing studio analysis. This conflict of interest was not sustainable when results started to turn against Coco Gauff.

She failed to defend the title at Flushing Meadows. The American youngster stated that she “mentally just literally collapsing” against Navarro in Wimbledon and the US Open. She racked up 19 double faults and 60 unforced errors in a three-et loss against Navarro in New York. The friction between Gauff and her coach was clearly seen at the Wimbledon. She shouted in frustration at Gilbert during her defeat against Navarro.

Gauff also had difficulties at the Paris Olympics after being the female flag bearer for the US team. She exited in the third round for singles and bowed out in women’s doubles and mixed doubles at the Summer Games. She also had a hard time defending her title at the Cincinnati Open and was stunned in the second round. The World No. 6 has struggled for consistency. Gauff has failed to reach a single final on the WTA Tour this year, exiting three Masters 1000 tournaments before the fourth round stage.

The Changes Had Been Predicted

Tennis legend McEnroe had predicted there may be changes to Coco Gauff’s team after the US Open. McEnroe stated at a Eurosport event that Gauff still has issues with her serve and her forehand. Gauff also seems to be more frustrated on the count and she might have had a pressure of expectations. People mostly see Gauff as a new star who can be the next Serena Williams. However, these expectations might have affected her performance on the court.

McEnroe also believed that the commercial adverts ahead of the US Open could have affected her preparations. Coco Gauff seems not to have a balanced time to work on her game and feel super confident again. She was expected to return to action at the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing, which begins on September 25. No information would become her next coach.
