The Cincinnati Bengals are reportedly set to franchise tag Wide Receiver Tee Higgins this offseason. This is the same situation he and the Bengals were in last season. Cincinnati also tagged Higgins in 2024. He made $21.8 million during the 2024-25 season.
If Higgins signs the tag again this offseason he would earn $26.18 million for the upcoming year. It would make him the 11th-highest-paid receiver in the league. Higgins is coming off a strong regular season with 73 receptions, 911 receiving yards, and 10 receiving touchdowns. Higgins is looking for a long-term contract extension, and his recent comments have made it seem like he is not happy with the Cincinnati Bengals organization. How will this situation resolve itself?

It was always going to be a busy offseason for the Cincinnati Bengals, and Higgins‘ contract may be the first shoe to drop. Quarterback Joe Burrow has not been shy about wanting the franchise to re-sign both Higgins and star Wide Receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Chase is also set to be a free agent this offseason and will be reportedly looking to reset the wide receiver market.
The Cincinnati Bengals are building their team in an unorthodox way. They are doubling down on offense this offseason after being hamstrung by their defense this season. That unit was one of the worst in the National Football League while their offense was one of the best. Cincinnati’s resources can be better spent by patching up their defense instead of improving an already strong part of the team. Between Burrow, Chase, and Higgins, they would account for over $100 million of Cincy’s salary cap.
Final Thoughts
The decision now rests in the hands of Higgins. He could either sign the franchise tag this offseason or threaten to hold out if the tag is not rescinded and he is not given a long-term extension. Higgins is seeking a contract and will have to decide if he is comfortable putting off his payday for another offseason.
