Christian Mbilli Sets Sights on Showdown in ’24

Christian Mbilli demonstrated his superiority in an August 17 fight against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, one that many fans had been waiting for. Having scored three straight knockouts, Mbilli took charge of the fight in the second round with a stiff right.

When Derevyanchenko’s arm swelled, “Solid” seized the opportunity to land clean hooks on his opponent’s body. The scorecards of the judges were in line with what Mbilli showed in the fight. Questioned during the post-fight interview, the winner stated that he was ready for greater opposition, and that he might face Canelo Alvarez after a forecasted victory over Edgar Berlanga.

Mbilli Dominates Derevyanchenko in Unanimous Decision

Last Saturday, one of the most highly touted punchers in the middleweight division, Nigeria’s Christian Mbilli (28-0, 23 KOs) brought his power to the ring against Ukrainian fighter Sergiy Derevyanchenko (15-6, 10 KOs), who he knocked out in a unanimous decision. 

The main event was promoted in collaboration with Top Rank and Eye of the Tiger, and broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+ in the United States, ESPN Deportes, Sky Sports in the United Kingdom, and Punching Grace in Canada and other territories.

Mbilli Eyes World Title Shot

At the time of the fight, Mbilli had three knockout victories in his previous fights. The fight with Derevyanchenko was always going to be a test, but he declared his dominance in the second round with his vicious right hand.

Derevyanchenko’s right arm was badly swollen by the fourth round, which affected his ability to respond. The Nigerian exploited the situation, getting in plenty of clean hooks. Though there was a feeling of hope in Round Seven in which Derevyanchenko landed a loose right to Mbilli’s thigh, the last part of the round was an emblematic assault by thee Nigerian slugger.

The scorecards given by the judges were in sync with these sentiments with Mbilli awarded scores of 10-9, 10-9, and 10-9. In his post-fight interview, Mbilli expressed his desire for bigger challenges: “I can fight for a title now. I wish to become a world champion, and to do that, I have to beat the best one. Who is the number one? I want to fight the number one.”

Victory vs. Derevyanchenko: One Step Closer to Canelo

Hinting at a match with Canelo Alvarez, Mbilli commented on the potential Canelo vs. Edgar Berlanga fight. “This fight will look like a cake-walk for Canelo. He will win this fight. But after that, I will be waiting for him,” Mbilli warned.

Christian’s victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko proves that he’s one of the most promising fighters in all of boxing. His authority and tactical readiness in the ring are vivid proof of his preparedness for even tougher opponents.
