Inside Look: Kansas City Chiefs Week 1 Injury Report for 2024 NFL Season

Chiefs

With the start of the 2024 NFL season just two days away, the Kansas City Chiefs are in the final stages of preparation before hosting their opener against the Baltimore Ravens. Before we dive into the game itself, let’s first examine the Chiefs’ injury report for this week to see which players are out and who might miss future games.

Chiefs WR Marquise “Hollywood” Brown

On Monday, the Chiefs released their injury report for Week 1. Of the nine players listed, only one did not participate in practice: wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown. Brown remains sidelined due to a sternoclavicular dislocation he suffered during the first play of the preseason against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has officially ruled Brown out for the opener against the Ravens.

Brown was the only player to receive this designation, as Reid confirmed today in his press conference that the rest of the active roster participated in Tuesday’s practice. With Brown out, the Chiefs are expected to have six wide receivers active for the Ravens game, including JuJu Smith-Schuster, who is familiar with the team and its offense. Earlier in the week, Reid indicated that he expects Smith-Schuster to play a significant role in Week 1.

Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire

The Chiefs will also be without their second-string Running Back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, for the season opener. Although Reid did not provide a specific injury designation for Edwards-Helaire, the 25-year-old has been placed on the reserve/non-football illness list, ruling him out for at least four games. On Monday, Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy discussed the team’s running back rotation heading into Thursday, with Isiah Pacheco starting and Samaje Perine and Carson Steele serving as backups.

“We’ll see,” Nagy said. “It’s one of those ‘next man up’ mentalities that we all talk about, but that’s real. Pacheco’s been phenomenal in understanding his role, and these other guys will need to step up in all aspects—running the football, pass protection, and catching out of the backfield.”

While Reid expects Perine to contribute on Thursday, Nagy emphasized the ongoing process of acclimating Perine to the team’s system.

“I think we’re learning that as we go through this,” Nagy added. “How much can he handle? What’s too much? There’s a balance. But one thing that’s clear is he’s super smart, a true pro, and gets it. We just have to find the right balance for him.”

Final Thoughts

With the Chiefs heading into Week 1 missing only two players from their active roster, the team is in as good a place as possible, considering how crucial it is to start the season healthy. As the core pieces of all three phases prepare for the banner night and the start of the 2024 season, all eyes will be on the new-look Chiefs as they pursue a third consecutive championship.
