Kansas City Chiefs’ Marquise Brown To Miss Week 1 Game

Wide Receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown from the Kansas City Chiefs is expected to miss the NFL regular-season opener on September 5 against the Baltimore Ravens, as reported by Adam Schefter via X.

How will the team fare in his absence?

In the Chiefs’ opening preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, August 10, Brown suffered a sternoclavicular injury and is currently expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Brown sustained the injury on the very first play of the game after completing an 11-yard catch. He noticed discomfort and was soon listed as questionable with a shoulder injury for the remainder of the game.

Postgame, Head Coach Andy Reid told reporters that Brown had suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation, which occurs when the clavicle moves into the sternum. Brown was hospitalized for further evaluation. Reid also said, “I think he’ll miss some time. We’ll just see where it’s at. They’re kind of going through it right now, and we’ll know more later on.”

Brown spent only one night in the hospital, being released on Monday morning, and avoided surgery.

Chiefs Offense In Brown’s Absence

Reid confirmed today that Brown won’t play in Week 1 against the Ravens, but his progress has been “incredible.” Despite this, Patrick Mahomes, Reid, and the rest of the Chiefs’ offense now need to figure out how to replace Brown’s contributions for the upcoming game. This is where the signing of JuJu Smith-Schuster comes into play. Smith-Schuster, already familiar with the team from his 2022 season when the Chiefs won their first of back-to-back Super Bowls, served as the team’s No. 1 receiver, finishing with 78 receptions for 933 yards.

However, unlike that season, the Chiefs now have many more weapons to depend on, such as Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, Travis Kelce, Isiah Pacheco, and others. Smith-Schuster won’t be responsible for the majority of the Chiefs’ offensive attack as he was during the 2022 season.

Final Thoughts

Despite the news, the Chiefs will likely be fine in the grand scheme of things as they head into this opener against the Ravens, a team they have historically dominated. Currently 5-1 against them in the Mahomes era, including their most recent defeat in the AFC Championship Game last year.

As long as Mahomes and Reid are still on that field, the offense should not miss a beat. Unlike last season or two years ago, the Chiefs have fully reloaded with their skill position players and now have some depth. Brown can miss a game or two, and the Chiefs’ offense should be able to remain afloat and possibly even begin to resemble the first few years of offense when Mahomes first arrived in Kansas City.
