The Miami Dolphins season took an abrupt turn when Tua Tagovailoa went down with his fourth career concussion. In their week two Thursday night game against the Buffalo Bills, Tua Tagovailoa was concussed on a first-down scramble. The game ultimately ended in a 31-10 loss as the Dolphins looked toward the reality of losing their star QB long-term.
Just days later, Miami acquired pro bowler Tyler ‘Snoop’ Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad.
Dolphins Sign Tyler Huntley Following Tua Injury
After backup QB Skyler Thompson was officially named the starter until Tua Tagovailoa could return, the Dolphins QB room was realized thin. To alleviate their newly found lack of depth, they went out to acquire a quarterback with starter experience.
“This is more for the depth,” McDaniel said of Huntley. “Nothing to do with Skylar. It helps the dynamics of the room, to give another guy with starting history to this team…. He was replacing the league MVP [Lamar Jackson] and you could tell from far away he’s a guy that the team absolutely believes could lead them to victory.
“That’s a huge tangible thing for a non QB 1. Without knowing exact timelines, we got to know first hand [what Huntley can do]. Moving forward, to secure some depth”
This move can prove as savvy as the season progresses, especially due to the questionable nature of Tua’s injury.
“He’s downstairs, smiling with teammates, working with medical staff diligently,” McDaniel said during his afternoon press briefing at the team facility. “He’s doing well today. He’s feeling good. But what does that mean in terms of medical diagnosis? I don’t base my judgments off my interactions with him as much as hearing the end result of the medical examination.”
Tyler Huntley’s Career
Snoop Huntley was acquired by the Ravens as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL draft. In 2021, Huntley was sprung into action following a season-ending injury to Lamar Jackson and managed to put on a show. His 1,081 yards, five touchdowns, and 294 rush yards in just seven games secured him a spot in the NFL.
2022 provided Huntley the same opportunity, in which he made the most of it. Huntley was named as a Pro Bowl alternate and eventually participated in the games following his 658 yards and three touchdowns. Huntley has 2,466 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career.
Can Huntley Win Dolphins QB1 Job

As head coach Mike McDaniel made clear, Skyler Thompson is the starting QB for the Dolphins. However, a string of mediocre performances and impressive practice play from Huntley could realize him stepping into the role. As he has done in the past, Huntley wields the potential to be a consistent starter in the NFL. With the Dolphins’, weapons like Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Raheem Mostert, and De’Von Achane, Huntley’s abilities could lead South Beach to surprising wins.
