IN PHOTOS: Bunny Shaw Rejoices with Player of the Year Award 2024

Bunny Shaw was one of the big-name signings to break into the Women’s Super League last year. After signing with Manchester City, she took a few games to get warmed up – but then, boy, did she take off. This year, she capped off a fantastic season with a well-deserved award.

Shaw won the 2023/2024 Barclay Women’s Super League Player of the Season honor, a fantastic trophy earned by a prolific striker and great teammate who has made a massive difference for City this season.

Shaw didn’t leave anything up to chance this year. She silenced her critics and doubters by placing the ball in the back of the net, time and time again. The Jamaican international was known for her prolific finishing in front of goal,  but she turned it up a notch this season by scoring 21 goals in just 18 games. That is registering more than one goal per game.

With just a few games left to play, she is on the right course to be named the top scorer in the league. So far, she has netted a goal for City every 66 minutes while on the field. Talk about a clinical finisher.

The Player of the Season award is not the only award that Bunny Shaw earned this year with her feats. She also has the FWA Footballer of the Year in her trophy cabinet, winning alongside fellow Manchester City player, the young and talented Phil Foden.

Hat Trick Hero

Her scoring ability has not only come during important times in games but has broken records that have stood in the league for numerous years. Her three-league hat-tricks are one-of-a-kind, and she did so in just four matches. Bunny Shaw was on a hot streak the whole season, but especially over the winter when she grabbed the 3-goal games between only November and January.

And if you are wondering if Bunny Shaw only scores against lower-level teams, think again – she scored in both Manchester derbies, arguably the most important and stress-inducing games of the season. She also scored to send City the three points over Chelsea, a team they are fighting with to earn the coveted first-place WSL trophy.

WSL – One Game Left

The Women’s Super League has just one game left to round out the 22 matches in the 2023/2024 campaign. Manchester United face off against Chelsea, whereas Aston Villa play Manchester City. Both Chelsea and Manchester City have away matches on the last day of the season, which could prove to be challenging for both sides.

Chelsea and Manchester City are currently tied on points for first place, with Chelsea having a two-point goal lead in the goal differential. If Chelsea wins and City loses, they are champions. If both teams win, it all comes down to goal differential.

This is where Bunny Shaw can make a huge difference. Her goal-scoring knack, and Sam Kerr’s absence at Chelsea, could be an issue for Emma Hayes’ side. Both managers will want to see their teams come out on top for the final match, but it could be slightly easier for City who are against the lower-ranked Aston Villa.

Tune in this week to see the huge last game day that will decide which team will lift the trophy this season. Will it be Bunny Shaw and City, or will Emma Hayes and Chelsea take the prize?
