Buffalo Sabres Blank Red Bull Munich 5-0 In Preseason Contest

The Sabres looked dominant over in Germany.

The Buffalo Sabres began the Global Series Challenge with an impressive win against the Red Bull Munich hockey team. The Sabres spoiled the grand opening of the SAP Garden in Munich, Germany with their 5-0 victory. The win improved the Sabres’ preseason record to 3-0 for their NHL roster team.

Sabres Talent Shines Through

The Buffalo Sabres dominated their opponents this afternoon. The team’s speed and experience were too much for the team from Germany. Buffalo applied a heavy forecheck throughout the game and consistently won the battles for the loose puck.

Sam Lafferty and Tage Thompson‘s first period goals set the contest’s tone. Both goals were deflected in, but the Sabres’ hard work ended up with a 2-0 lead. Dylan Cozens scored a power play goal at 13:41 of the second period with an amazing shot in the top left corner of the net and four minutes later, Jack Quinn made it 4-0 on a partial breakaway.

Buffalo Continued Offensive Excellence

At the 3:48 mark of the final period, the fans in the SAP Garden had a little something to cheer about. Hometown boy J.J. Peterka scored on a perfect shot from the top, left faceoff circle giving Buffalo a 5-0 lead. Before being drafted by the Sabres, Peterka played 41 games for the Red Bull recording 7 goals and 4 assists.

Several other Sabres had a strong game against the Munich team including Tage Thompson and Zach Benson. Both players were all over the ice and constantly put pressure on the Red Bull’s defense. Buffalo ended up with 40 shots on net in this team’s preseason finale.

Defense Shines Throughout The Game

The Buffalo Sabres’ defense was solid for the entire game as net minders Ukko Pekka Luukkonen and Devon Levi shared the shutout. Buffalo held their opponent to 17 shots and spent little time in their zone. The Sabres’ goaltending is expected to feature one of the top duos in the league this year.

Rasmus Dahlin saw his first preseason action against the Red Bulls after suffering a mid-body injury early in training camp. In typical Dahlin style, he had a strong game in the Sabres end and quickly jumped into the offensive play. In a well-deserved move, the team named Dahlin a Captain for the 2024-2025 season earlier this week.

Regular Season To Kick Off Next Week

The Sabres will continue in the Global Series Challenge and will remain in Europe this week. The team will head to Prague, Czechia where they will open the regular season with back-to-back games against the New Jersey Devils next weekend. Buffalo will return to home ice on October 10 for a battle against the L.A. Kings.
