Cleveland Browns Defensive End Myles Garrett has been one of the NFL’s most elite defensive stars for several years. The former first overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft has been everything he was originally cracked up to be. The perennial Pro Bowler was named the League’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.
A 6’4″, 270-pound product from Texas A&M was an instant sensation, and over time, he’s emerged as one of the team’s locker room leaders. He is a terror for opposing quarterbacks having racked up 88.5 sacks in his first seven seasons as a pro.
Heading into the 2024 campaign, Garrett has promised Browns fans and the media that he plans on upping his game even further. While it seems hard to believe, the veteran defender seems confident that he can post better numbers and elevate his team to a whole new level. Will he be able to live up to it?

Despite his initial success in the NFL, Garrett says he wants to take on even more of a leadership role with the Browns. He welcomes any challenge that an opposing team might throw his way, and he hasn’t been shy when discussing his changes in strategy for the upcoming season.
“I look forward to it, I look forward to the challenge, whatever they throw at me,” Garrett said, according to a recent SI.com report. “It gets me excited. The odds just get stacked against me or against us and it’s like, ‘How are you going to find another way to be unstoppable? How are you going to find another way to change or disrupt the game? How are you going to put yourself in a position to win and put your teammates in a position to win? How do you allow them to take over if you’re going to take two or three?”
“Those are the kind of thought processes I have,” he continued. “If I’m going to win two, but it’s going to take too much time for me to get there, it’s getting my hands up or maybe running a game, so that my guy can get free. Because they’re spending so much attention on me, it’s seeing how someone can make the play, not just me. It’s a defense full of stars. So I want all of these guys to get the opportunity to shine.”
Along with his ability to sack the quarterback, Garrett has 17 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, 16 defended passes, and 305 total tackles. He will be counted on to lead a Browns’ defense that will have to cover for some potential offensive liabilities.
Can the Browns Bounce Back in 2024?
It’s a pivotal season for Garrett and his Browns teammates. After losing star QB Deshaun Watson to a displaced fracture to the glenoid in his right shoulder during a week 10 game against Baltimore, they rallied around emergency replacement Joe Flacco to finish 10-7 and scratch their way into the playoffs. They would eventually lose their wild card match up against the Houston Texans.
While Flacco departed via free agency to the Indianapolis Colts, Watson will be back under center. He’s been throwing well in training camp and many observers believe the Browns could be poised for a bigger postseason run. That is… if they can keep their quarterback on his feet and healthy.
In the meantime, Myles Garrett and company will try to keep points off the board, as Cleveland looks to rebound from an up-and-down season a year ago. They open up the 2024 schedule on Sept. 8 at home against Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys (12-5 in 2023).
