Team Spain and Greece in the 2024 Paris Olympics Group A will face each other in their second games of the Olympics. Currently, Team Greece is third, while Team Spain is fourth in this preliminary round for Group A. Also, what separates these teams from each other is their point difference.

Team Spain struggled to win their first match against the Australian Boomers. The Spanish basketball team lost with a 12-point margin (92-80) which puts the team at the bottom of the table in Group A. The team struggled to defend well and enhance effective ball movement throughout the game. However, this team has players that could break out in this second game.

Team Greece made their Olympic berth after being struck with years of Olympic basketball drought. Also, the team lost its debut game against Canada with a seven-point margin (79-86). What Greece lacked in their team was good supportive players that could amplify Giannis Antetokounmpo’s offensive performance. However, it was a narrow win for Team Canada which means Greece has the chance to regroup and stand out against Spain. Who will come out on top between these two teams?

The NBA player Santi Aldama starred in his debut game against Team Australia. The Grizzlies forward got 27 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Also, the 23-year-old made 50% of his field attempts (6-of-12), and beyond the arch, he made 75% of his attempts (6-of-8). Finally, from the charity stripe, he made 90% of his shots (9-of-10). Aldama should display more of this aggressive offense and good defensive performance. However, the team’s overall defense would determine if this Grizzlies player’s offense outshines Greece.

The veteran star, Rudy Fernandez, had little to show after coming off the bench for 17 minutes. The 39-year-old got an assist and a steal. However, center Willy Hernangomez played more offense than defense as he got 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Though his contribution to the game was good, Hernangomez needs to work on his field goal percentage as he made 42.9% in field goals (6-of-14). To beat Team Greece, Spain needs to have a stellar offensive performance.

Team Greece

The former NBA champ, Antetokounmpo, exploded against the Canadian basketball team. Giannis got 34 points, five rebounds and two assists. Also, the Greek Freak played more on the offensive court which didn’t balance his overall performance. In the field, he made 64.7% of his attempts and 80% from the charity stripe (12-of-15). Just like Aldama, what Antetokounmpo needs is an excellent defensive performance from Team Greece since he’s their offensive powerhouse.

Kostas Papanikolaou was the second-best performer on the court. He displayed a good 3-and-D performance against Canada. However, it wasn’t enough to put his team on top. The Greece forward got 17 points, three assists, four rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Also, Kostas made 62.5% of his field goal attempts (5-of-8) and 50% in three-pointers (3-of-6).  This type of performance should give Greece’s basketball team an edge over Spain, given that Greece plays a better defense to support these top performers.

Possible Breakout Player of the Game

Team Spain

Though Rudy Fernandez didn’t perform well from the bench, the 39-year-old could break out against Greece. Also, Sergio Lull is another player to watch out for in tomorrow’s game, he got 17 points coming off the bench for 24 mins. This Spain versus Greece match could be a ‘my offense vs. your offense’ playbook thus we should watch for Sergio’s three points if it improves. Against Team Australia, the Spanish guard made 5-of-15 three-point attempts.

Team Greece

Vasilis Toliopoulos came off the bench for 19 minutes to make nine points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Though his field goal and three-point percentage were low (2-7 and 1-5), he has the potential of being the team’s best sixth man. Thus, Toliopoulos could improve his offensive and defensive performance against the Spanish basketball team.
