Breaking News: Relationship in Danger As Barcelona all Set to Sack Xavi

Recent comments made by Xavi Hernández have made Joan Laporta, the President of FC Barcelona, and major members of the Barcelona board discontented with the club’s manager. Since rumors hit social media, it has been agog with speculations and anticipations about Xavi’s future.

Not too long ago it looked like the legendary midfielder was going to stick around beyond the summer, but the mood in the club seems to have changed. It is understood that Xavi had earlier convinced the club’s president, Joan Laporta, that he believed he could achieve a lot of greatness with the youngsters he had in the team.

Xavi’s Press Conference That Caused The Rift

Yesterday in a press conference, he sounded a lot more realistic. He said that unlike a few years ago when the manager could ask for any player that he needed to be able to compete, the situation was no longer the same. The Barcelona board considers the comments to be defeatist and too pessimistic for a manager of Barcelona.

“I think that the fans should understand that our situation, especially the FFP, is very complicated. It’s not like 25 years ago where the coach could choose any player he wanted.”

These comments have led to unrest among senior members of the board speaking the speculations that the club’s board could sack Xavi.

Was Xavi Really Wrong With His Comments?

Xavi Barcelona coach

Luis Garcia, a former Barcelona and Liverpool player, defended Xavi’s statements. He called this a transition period for the club considering the club’s struggles competing with clubs with bigger purchasing power in the transfer windows, and eventually having to settle with a squad filled with players that are mostly under 20 years of age.

At the moment, the club’s goal is to finish above Girona in the league in second place before considering what would happen in the transfer window. With the 2-0 win over Almería last night and Girona’s 1-0 loss to Villarreal, the club is currently four points ahead of Girona with two games to go.

Concerning his comments about the financial situation, Xavi has come out to defend himself by saying:

“I just said that economic situation at Barca is not the best. We are trying to work together with the club to get the best situation and strengthen ourselves. From here we will face the coming season with enthusiasm to get titles.”

What’s Really Going On Inside Barcelona?

Xavi

The problem within Barcelona concerning Xavi’s comments is that the club can’t argue that he’s right about them not being able to buy players as they could 25 years ago and have to settle for young academy graduates, the club wants to send a different message.

Compared to the usual prowess of Barcelona, this season has been a tough season for the club. The club has played all of its home games away from the Camp Nou and the board is looking for a way to send optimism to the fans.

One can argue that this is one of the mistakes the club made this season. With the caliber of players currently at its disposal, the club set expectations that it could compete against the powerful teams in Europe including Real Madrid.

With recent news suggesting that Kylian Mbappé will be playing in Real Madrid next season, the club is trying to minimize the fear in the minds of the Barcelona fans about their capacity to compete with the rest of Europe.
