Former Golden State Warriors star Point Guard Baron Davis never played with Klay Thompson but knows what it’s like to play for a good team. Davis, 45, spent four seasons with the Warriors from 2005 to 2008 and was a member of the Warriors’ 2007 “We Believe” team that eliminated the No. 1 seed Dallas Mavericks on May 3, 2007, to become the third No. 8 seed to eliminate a No. 1 seed in the NBA Playoffs. The UCLA alum averaged a team-best 25 points in the Warriors and Mavericks’ first-round series.
Davis revealed in a recent interview with Brandon “Scoop B” Johnson that he had a heartbroken reaction when Thompson, 34, departed the Warriors and Bay Area for the Mavericks and Dallas this past July. Keep reading for more about Davis’ thoughts on Thompson’s departure.
Baron Davis’ Heartbroken Reaction
NBA on TNT studio analyst Baron Davis was recently interviewed by sportswriter Brandon Robinson. Davis revealed his heartbroken reaction to Klay Thompson’s departure to Robinson, 39, in that recent interview.
According to Sports Illustrated, Davis said, “That was heartbreaking because you always want to see those dudes stay together for what they accomplished … And you want someone like Klay Thompson to play with one team; you know, in the NBA the goal is to play with one team your entire career and for those three guys Klay, Steph and Draymond to see them go from babies to grown men to now veterans, it was kind of heartbreaking.”
Davis’ reaction was completely understandable, as many others were hurt to see Thompson leave the Bay Area. Davis seemed to want to see Thompson, Curry, and Green continue to succeed as a trio on the court.
Baron Davis’ Thoughts On Klay Thompson
The news of veteran Shooting Guard Klay Thompson leaving the Golden State Warriors hurt former NBA Point Guard Baron Davis but Davis reportedly understood the player-first mentality of some, if not most, players in the NBA.
Sports Illustrated reported that Davis said, “At the same time I’m always player-first and so, whatever’s best for Klay and I think that he’s going to get an opportunity to start in Dallas and play with two potent scorers that’s going to open up a lot of opportunities and he’s gonna get a lot of wide open shots.” Davis’ thoughts about Thompson’s departure were reassuring in the end.
His Message For Klay Thompson
According to his recent revelation to Brandon Robinson, Baron Davis seemed to have a balanced message for Klay Thompson. Davis was heartbroken over Thompson’s departure from the Golden State Warriors but appeared to understand Thompson, who reportedly wanted a change of scenery.
Thompson’s swift decision to sign with the Dallas Mavericks was shocking to most if not all, individuals. However, sportsmanlike players and fans eventually understood his decision and simply wished him well in his next chapter in Dallas.
