Bangladesh Star Shakib Al Hasan Announces Retirement From T20Is

Glenn Maxwell calls Jasprit Bumrah the best in the world, Mayank Yadav

Before the second India vs. Bangladesh Test at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on September 27 (Friday), star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has declared his retirement from Test cricket. As he prepared to play the India vs. Bangladesh Test match in Kanpur, Shakib Al Hasan revealed some unexpected information on his cricket career.

Shakib was named in a murder case in Dhaka last month, along with 147 others, as part of Bangladesh’s political upheaval. Shakib has played in every T20 World Cup from its inception in 2007, finishing the 2024 edition as the competition’s all-time highest wicket-taker with 50 wickets. Shakib has represented Bangladesh in 129 T20Is, scoring 2551 runs and taking 149 wickets.

On the eve of the BAN Kanpur Test against IND, Shakib said in a statement that he believes this will be his final Twenty20 international match. He has expressed to the BCB his desire to conclude his Test career in front of his Mirpur home audience. Shakib Al Hasan stated that if the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) does not agree to his desire to play a farewell match at Mirpur in front of his home supporters, then the IND vs. Test BAN Kanpur will be his final one.

“I think I have played my last T20I match. I’ve informed the BCB about my wish to end my Test career in Mirpur, and they’ve agreed in principle. They’re working on making that possible. If things don’t work out, then this match against India will be my last Test,” the 37-year-old batsman said. Nevertheless, the announcement about his participation in the South Africa Test matches is contingent upon certain requirements, as Shakib has asked for the freedom to enter and exit the nation. Shakib Al Hasan is without a doubt the best player Bangladesh has produced.

Shakib’s T20I Retirement

Shakib Al Hasan has announced his retirement from the T20Is and is expected to retire from the longer format of the game shortly. Shakib plans to play in the 2025 Champions Trophy as his final ODI assignment. Despite leading Bangladesh to victories against England, Ireland, and the Netherlands in the 2011 World Cup, the team crashed out, and many pointed the finger at Shakib.

Despite all the criticism, Shakib played well for Kolkata in the 2011 Indian Premier League and was ranked No. 1 among all-rounders by the ICC thanks to his consistency. He succeeded Mohammad Ashraful as captain and led from the front, taking five wickets and scoring an unbroken 96 in the second Test in Grenada against a weakened West Indies team. Bangladesh ultimately won the Test series, 3-0.

After playing in the ODI series, Shakib Al Hasan made history in November 2014 when he joined Imran Khan and Ian Botham as the only players in history to score a century and take ten wickets in one Test match. In December 2014, the BCB lifted the ban on his non-objection certificate, allowing him to play in international competitions. That same month, Shakib Al Hasan signed a contract with the Melbourne Renegades to play in the Big Bash League.
