Breaking: Baltimore Ravens Trade For Cornerback Tre’Davious White

Baltimore Ravens

After trading for wide receiver Diontae Johnson from the Carolina Panthers last week, the Baltimore Ravens followed that up with another shrewd move by trading for veteran cornerback Tre’Davious White. Although their secondary has not played up to par in 2024 due to the new defensive scheme and injuries, the biggest need was the pass rush. White is also a 29-year-old cornerback who was benched from the Los Angeles Rams due to on-field performance the last few weeks.

Cornerback Tre’Davious White A Low-Cost Gamble

This trade is a mixed bag due to the clear need for an edge rusher on the Baltimore Ravens. White will likely compete with Brandon Stephens and former first-round pick Nate Wiggins to play next to Marlon Humphrey. Humphrey has been one of the bright spots but has missed a few games due to injury. Their safeties Kyle Hamilton, Marcus Williams, and Eddie Jackson have all disappointed massively at some point or another this season.

The likes of Odafe Oweh, Kyle Van Noy, and Nnamdi Madubuike have been lacking in the pass rush department for the Baltimore Ravens. With the abundant amount of draft capital general manager Eric DeCosta has, another trade involving an edge rusher would’ve made this trade make more sense.

Los Angeles Rams Involve Late Pick Swap in Trade

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Baltimore Ravens were also involved in New Orleans Saints former cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who was shipped to the Washington Commanders. The Tre’Davious White move to Baltimore is one that isn’t a needle mover or anything close to it. White signed a one-year deal this past free agency after a solid seven-year career with the Buffalo Bills.

The Los Angeles Rams likely made this move to also commit to their defensive youth for the remainder of the 2024 season. Ideally, the Baltimore Ravens should’ve gone after one of the pass rushers who were dealt with earlier today. After missing out on Lattimore due to the price, they settled on this move for White right before the deadline after making the Johnson trade last week.

Final Thoughts on the Baltimore Ravens Secondary

On the other hand, the draft capital involved is a 2026 7th rounder for White and a 2027 7th rounder, so it was for nothing essentially. If the Baltimore Ravens can get his former All-Pro play back when he was with the Bills, then it was a worthy gamble. But if not, this was a nothing-burger for a team that is trying to contend for a Super Bowl at 6-3 with the likes of the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs. But this is especially the case in the AFC North with the 6-2 Pittsburgh Steelers, who made two trades involving edge rusher Preston Smith and wide receiver Mike Williams.
