Baltimore Ravens: RB Owen Wright Suffers Broken Foot

Baltimore Ravens running back Owen Wright suffers a broken foot and will undergo surgery for his hairline fracture, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec. The 25-year-old was carted off Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers.

While it might not be season-ending, it is worth noting the undrafted rookie from 2023 was already fighting for a potential roster or practice squad spot on the team. This hurts his chances, as the Monmouth rusher was featured this preseason.

Owen Wright was on the practice squad last season as a reserve but may be out for several weeks to months with this injury. It is unfortunate for a running back who showed something this preseason and while he was a long shot to make the active roster, the Ravens could’ve used more competition.

The 5’9″ and 217-pound runner had 18 carries for 52 yards on the ground through three games. While this may seem insignificant, it is in terms of knowing who Baltimore could keep, he could’ve been a candidate back on their practice squad. Now, there is less confidence that happens right now.

UDFA Might Not Make the Roster, Injury Not Season-Ending

Owen Wright spent two seasons at William & Mary before transferring to Monmouth. His best season in 2022 wasn’t eye-popping in terms of yards with just 297. However, he had an absurd 16 rushing touchdowns as a power back. The Baltimore Ravens could’ve envisioned a “Gus Edwards” type situation potentially but that might not be the case anymore.

Edwards, now on the Los Angeles Chargers, was an undrafted rookie out of Rutgers back in 2018 and had a career-high in rushing touchdowns last year in Baltimore. As a Raven, the veteran had 13 rushing touchdowns in 2023 despite dealing with multiple injuries in the previous seasons.

Baltimore Ravens RB Depth on the Roster in Question

While the Ravens are more than fine with the workhorse legendary rusher Derrick Henry, at age 30, they might want to limit his touches throughout the year. For the Tennessee Titans, the All-Pro did have a down year but is looking for a bounce-back season or two with a new team.

Gearing for a Super Bowl run, having Henry fresh in December and January is ultimately the goal. In that case, Baltimore will try to use Justice Hill, who they re-signed this past offseason, more often as a change of pace back. They also have a breakout undrafted rookie rusher from last year Keaton Mitchell, but he is coming off a season-ending torn ACL and is on the P.U.P. list to start 2024.

Other running backs on the team include free agent signing John Kelly and Chris Collier. Rasheen Ali, their fifth-round rookie from Marshall, is dealing with his injury (neck) and may have uncertainty about his role on the team. Ultimately, they will likely sign another free agent like in previous seasons to help improve the depth at the running back position.
