Atletico Madrid is set to clash against Girona in what should be an excellent La Liga game.
Today’s host recently earned a 2-1 victory against Villarreal. Axel Witsel and Saul Niguez each found the back of the net. Additionally, Memphis Depay and Antoine Griezmann each started, but we’re subsequently subbed off early.
On the other side, the visitors are coming off a thrilling 3-2 victory against Real Betis. Artem Dovbyk scored from the penalty spot. And Cristhian Stuani was able to score a late goal in stoppage time.
But do you think it’s possible that the away team will be able to grab a defining victory today?
Atletico Madrid vs. Girona Notable Trends
Atletico Madrid
The hosts are sitting in fourth place. With 58 points and a close goal differential, this team may end up regretting some of the games that they dropped earlier. Sitting at 58 points and seven points behind Girona, the gap is too much at this point in the season.
However, Alvaro Morata is leading the way with 14 goals. Additionally, Griezmann has seven assists to lead the team while also providing 11 goals. Depay has five goals and an assist at this moment, but he looks to make a larger and more consistent impact. Finally, the defender, Witsel has two goals to his name.
Girona
Sitting in third, there’s plenty on the line, as they are only two points behind Barcelona with 65 points in La Liga at the moment. With 20 wins, five draws, and five losses in the year, this team has been consistent throughout the campaign. As mentioned, they have a similar goal difference as their opponents today. However, they have been able to find the back of the net eight more times and have 62 total goals on the year so far. With only 36 goals allowed, this is a team that can win in multiple ways and often does.
Dovbyk is the top scorer, with 16 through 28 games played so far. Additionally, Savio is a great overall contributor, as he has eight goals and eight assists for Girona. Finally, Viktor Tsygankov is having an overall good year with six goals and four assists so far. But Stuani will well hope to add to his tally from the last match, as he sits at eight goals at the moment and two assists.
