Arsenal vs Liverpool: Premier League Preview

Arsenal

Arsenal is preparing to welcome Liverpool on Sunday for a highly anticipated Premier League clash. Both sides want to build on their strong performances and reinforce their positions in the league. With the stage set at the Emirates Stadium in London, fans can expect an exciting and pivotal match in the season.

Arsenal vs Liverpool: Preview

Both Arsenal and Liverpool secured tight victories in their midweek Champions League fixtures, with Arsenal edging Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 and Liverpool achieving a similar result against RB Leipzig. For Arsenal, last weekend’s trip to the South Coast was a rare setback. The Gunners hadn’t faced any hardship before their loss to Bournemouth in 2024 began. However, the impressive run ended gradually.

Despite William Saliba’s red card in the first half, Arsenal had done enough defensively to secure a draw against City at least. This time, a well-executed goal by Ryan Christie from a corner and a penalty by Justin Kluivert ended their 12-game unbeaten away run in the league. Liverpool, meanwhile, headed to the Emirates without the same disciplinary issues and was full of confidence under manager Arne Slot. They have shown decent progress but faced a vital challenge against Chelsea, and they came out strong enough to overcome it as well.

Liverpool holds a one-point lead over City, but that could change if City wins against Southampton on Saturday. Liverpool’s victory in Leipzig wasn’t without its moments of danger. Still, RB Leipzig’s mistakes and lack of finishing kept Liverpool’s winning run intact, extending it to eight games in all competitions.

Arsenal vs Liverpool: Team News

With Saliba suspended, Kieran Tierney out of contention, and Takehiro Tomiyasu struggling with a new knee injury, Arteta faced an unwelcome defensive headache on Tuesday night. To make matters worse, Riccardo Calafiori had to leave the field in the second half due to an awkward fall.

Arteta expressed concern over Calafiori’s condition, describing it as “not great.” The Italian was absent from Friday’s training alongside Jurrien Timber (muscle) and Bukayo Saka (hamstring). Despite these challenges, Arteta remained tight-lipped during his pre-match press conference, leaving the door open for at least two of the sidelined players to possibly return. However, the situation for Martin Odegaard looks less encouraging.

There’s some optimism around Saka, who reportedly aims to be fit for the Liverpool game. In that match, Kai Havertz has a chance to make history as the first Arsenal player since Thierry Henry to score in six straight home league games.

Liverpool is dealing with its injury woes. Alisson Becker is still out with a thigh problem, but backup keeper Caoimhin Kelleher stepped up with crucial saves in their midweek win over Leipzig. Harvey Elliott (foot) and Diogo Jota (abdominal) are also unavailable, meaning Darwin Nunez is set to lead the attack. Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa and Conor Bradley remain doubtful.

Possible Starting XI

Arsenal possible starting lineup: Raya; Timber, White, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Merino, Partey, Rice; Saka, Havertz, Martinelli

Liverpool possible starting lineup: Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Nunez
