Team USA Upsets Team Canada in 2-1 Overtime Thriller to Win Gold in Men’s Hockey

Jack Hughes (86) of Team USA celebrates with fans after defeating Canada in the men's ice hockey gold medal game

In a game that played out eerily similar to the Team USA women’s hockey gold medal match, the Team USA men’s hockey team was able to strike gold by defeating Team Canada in one of the most thrilling Winter Olympic hockey games of all time in Milan on Sunday.

Miracle On Ice Part II Lives Up To the Hype

On the anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice” game that occurred in the 1980 Winter Olympics between Team USA and the Soviet Union, the Americans once again excelled in the underdog role to take home the gold medal. It would be the U.S. that would strike first in this game, as Forward Matt Boldy would find the back of the net to put Team USA up 1-0 just six minutes into the first period.

However, Team Canada would be in control from that point on, as they went on the offensive over the next two periods, thoroughly outshooting Team USA over that span. Thankfully for Team USA, the defense was able to hold off the hype aggressive Canadian offense, as Goalie Connor Hellebuyck put together a masterclass performance in the gold medal game. Hellebuyck stopped 41 shots by Team Canada, showcasing why he’s the reigning Vezina and Hart Trophy winner in the NHL.

Neither defense would crack as the game would head into overtime, where Jack Hughes would etch his name into Team USA hockey history as he knocked in the game-winning goal just 3 minutes into overtime to deliver the U.S. their first gold medal in 46 years.

That historic shot for Hughes was set up on a great pass from his teammate Zach Werenski, who was able to wrestle the puck away from Canada’s Nathan MacKinnon and sent a sweet cross-ice delivery to Hughes for the dagger.

Team USA Delivers On Its Mission To Win Gold

In the months leading up to the Olympics, all the American players spoke extensively about how much they wanted to bring home the gold, even inventing a mantra of “gold or bust” to emphasize their commitment. Team Canada has long served as the gold standard on the international stage in men’s hockey, having won a record nine Olympic gold medals in its history.

This game marked just the third time that Team USA and Team Canada would meet in the gold medal match in the Olympics, with Canada winning those two previous matches in 2010 and 2002. While winning gold against your northern neighbor was the forefront of Team USA’s mindsets coming into the game, this match also had two other bits of value attached to it.

That value would be to avenge their loss to Canada in last year’s Four Nations title game, and to finally beat Canada in an international competition since the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

Team USA Pays Tribute to Johnny Gaudreau in the Win

Shortly after winning the gold, Team USA captain Auston Matthews, Werenski, and Matthew Tkachuk would pay tribute to the late Johnny Gaudreau by skating around the ice with his jersey on during the celebration. Gadreau was a prime candidate to make this year’s Olympic team but was unfortunately killed alongside his brother when they were both struck by an SUV while out bicycling back in 2024.

Team USA paid tribute to Gadreau throughout the tournament as they hung his jersey in their locker room for each game during the Olympics. Call it divine intervention or something similar to that, but perhaps that bit of tribute played a major factor in Team USA’s upset win over the Canadians. Nonetheless, Team USA now sits atop the Olympic mountain in both men’s and women’s hockey for the next few years.
