Team USA Takes Down Team Canada in Women’s Hockey Gold Medal Match in 2-1 Overtime Classic

Team USA celebrates winning the Gold Medal in Women’s ice hockey against Canada in overtime of the women's ice hockey gold medal game during the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

After losing to Canada in the gold medal match at the 2022 Winter Olympics, Team USA finally got its revenge, narrowly defeating Team Canada in a thrilling overtime victory to take home gold for the third time ever.

Hilary Knight Caps Off Legendary Olympic Career With A Clutch Performance

There aren’t many storybook-type endings when it comes to sports, but longtime Team USA forward Hilary Knight made sure that she would go out on top in the final game of her distinguished Olympic career.

Knight would score the game-tying goal with just over 2 minutes left in the game to help send the match into overtime. That goal by Knight not only kept Team USA’s hopes at gold alive, but it also made Knight the all-time leading scorer in U.S. women’s Olympic history.

Team USA Cracks Team Canada’s Stout Defense Down the Stretch

Despite Team Canada scoring a goal midway through the 1st period, the game remained in an offensive stalemate for most of the game. After Knight knocked in a desperation goal from Team USA as they went empty net to try to claw back in the game, much of the overtime period seemed marred by bad play by both teams on offense, yet again.

That would be until defensemen Megan Keller would drive past two Canadian defenders to score the game-winning goal several minutes into overtime. That score would be set up on a great go-ahead pass from forward Taylor Heise, who was able to catch the Canadians sleeping on defense during a badly timed line change.

Team USA Caps Off Dominant Tournament In Milan

Before the gold medal game, there was plenty of talk about the current American women’s team being the best the United States has ever produced, and the statistics back up that claim. Team USA had destroyed every bit of their competition on their path, outscoring their first six opponents 31-1, showcasing all-time-level scoring and defense.

Team USA had also not given up a goal in 16 consecutive periods before Canada’s score in the 1st period on Thursday. The only other goal Team USA would surrender during the Olympics came in their opening game of group play, when they coughed up possession, leading to an easy breakaway goal for the Czech Republic. Aside from that mistake, the defense for Team USA was razor-sharp throughout the Olympics.

Significance Of Team USA’s Gold Medal Win

While a revenge win against their northern neighbor to collect gold is certainly a win that will take center stage for both Team USA fans and players, it could also mark a changing of the guard in international women’s hockey. For decades, the Canadian team has served as the gold standard in the sport, collecting 5 gold medals over the past 6 Olympics.

However, the United States team has been hot on the Canadians’ heels, having won 3 Olympic gold medals since 1998, as well as 11 gold medals at the Women’s World Championships over the past 26 years.

What’s Next

For much of the past 26 years, it has been the U.S. or Canada at the top of the world in the sport, but with Team USA’s recent success, the throne could be theirs for years to come. Only time will tell whether this long-standing rivalry will ultimately be in Team USA’s favor, but a tide is certainly starting to shift on that front.
