Maya Brady Drafted No. 1 Overall In AUSL Expansion Draft
The Brady family dinners must be absolutely exhausting. Imagine trying to casually mention you won a rec league pickleball game when your uncle is a seven-time Super Bowl champion. But on Monday, Maya Brady, former UCLA superstar and niece of the legendary NFL quarterback, did something her famous uncle never could.
She went first overall.
While Tom famously waited until pick No. 199 to hear his name called, Maya didn’t have to wait long at all. In a move that surprised exactly no one who has watched her crush softballs into the parking lot at Easton Stadium, the Oklahoma City Spark selected her with the top pick in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) expansion draft.
A New Era For the Brady Name
For years, Maya has navigated the immense shadow cast by the Brady surname. But if Monday night proved anything, itโs that she isnโt just riding coattailsโsheโs blazing her own trail. The Spark, one of two new franchises joining the league for 2026, wasted zero time snatching up the rights to the shortstop.
And why wouldn’t they? Weโre talking about a two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year who practically rewrote the record books in Westwood. During her tenure at UCLA, she mashed 71 home runs and drove in 246 runs. She has the kind of swagger and clutch gene that seems to be factory-installed in anyone sharing her DNA.
In a 2021 interview, she admitted that carrying the family name comes with pressure, but she called it “good pressure.” Clearly, she handles it just fine. While her uncle made a career out of playing with a chip on his shoulder from being overlooked, Maya enters her pro career with the target squarely on her back.
Spark and Cascade Shake Up the Roster
The draft wasn’t just the Maya Brady show, though she certainly stole the headlines. This expansion draft was a necessary step as the AUSL grows from four teams to six, adding the Oklahoma City Spark and the Cascade to the mix.
The Cascade, not wanting to be left out of the splashy moves, used their No. 2 pick to grab former Oklahoma Sooners Pitcher Sam Landry. It was a smart pivot after the Spark locked down the best bat on the board. The Cascade also snagged Pitcher Kelly Maxwell as the top pick in the allocation draft, setting up a nice little arms race in the league.
What This Means for Pro Softball
This draft signals a massive shift for the league. With the addition of two new squads, the talent pool is getting deeper, and the competition is getting fiercer. The existing teams, the Blaze, Volts, Talons, and Bandits, could only protect a handful of players, leaving plenty of talent exposed for the taking.
But the story of the night remains the newest face of the Oklahoma City Spark. Maya Brady has officially turned pro, and sheโs doing it with the kind of fanfare usually reserved for NFL Sundays. If her collegiate career is any indication, the Spark just got a whole lot brighter.
As for Uncle Tom? He might have the rings, but Mayaโs got the draft pedigree.
