93 Days Until The Winter Olympics: Giorgio Armani To Be Honored During Opening Ceremonies
When the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics start in February, the event will honor the life and legacy of Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer who passed away at 91 this past summer.
Giovanni Malagò, president of the Milano Cortina organizing committee, announced plans for a special tribute during the opening ceremony to celebrate Armani’s incredible impact on both fashion and sports.
A Celebration of Italian Excellence
The opening ceremony is titled “Armonia” (Harmony). The main opening ceremony will take place at San Siro Stadium in Milan on February 6. Plans call for the focus of the event to be an LED stage in the middle of the stadium. In addition, for the first time in Olympic history, two cauldrons will be lit simultaneously at the start of the Olympics. There will be one in Milan and one in Cortina d’Ampezzo. This is to show the symbolism of linking the city and mountains in harmony, according to organizers.
The tribute to Armani will be woven into these opening ceremonies, although even general details of the event have not yet been announced. What is known, however, is the impact Armani had on his hometown of Milan and sports.
Armani’s Game-Changing Olympic Designs
Armani had a role in Olympic sportswear several Olympics ago. He began an EA7 line and indicated that it was important that his work ensured that Italian athletes didn’t just compete, they stood out, confident and composed.
His designs quickly became iconic, giving Italian athletes sleek, modern uniforms that exuded national pride. From embroidered lines of Italy’s national anthem to minimalist yet elegant designs, he turned athletic wear into an art form.
Besides the Olympics, Armani’s relationship with sports included ownership, design and personal relationships. Over 25 years ago, he began designing for football (soccer) teams. He also saved a basketball team, Olimpia Milano, from bankruptcy. Under his leadership, the team flourished, winning multiple championships. Armani rarely missed a home game, building strong connections with players and fans.
One of his most touching connections was with Kobe Bryant when the late Lakers legend was just 21 years old. Their relationship went beyond fashion, rooted in mutual respect and shared ties to Italy. Bryant, who spent part of his childhood in Italy, admired Armani’s advice and legacy.
A Lasting Legacy
As Milano Cortina 2026 approaches, Armani’s influence will be seen during the Games. His final Olympic project was the design of the Italy Olympic team uniforms. This ensures that his vision of elegance will have the world stage one last time.
As the opening ceremonies are held and the Olympic flame is lit in a little over 90 days, the tribute to Armani in his hometown is sure to be touching and inspirational.
