Australian Boomers Make History With Three-Peat In FIBA Asia Cup
The Australian Boomers, also known as the Australian Men’s National Basketball Team, recently made history with a three-peat in the FIBA Asia Cup. Here’s what you need to know about the Boomers’ most recent feat.
Australia Boomers Make History with Three-Peat
The Australian Boomers made history with a three-peat and subsequently became the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Champions. Basketball Australia wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “Historic three-peat for the Australian Boomers.”
The Boomers outlasted the Chinese Men’s National Team, also known as Team Dragon, 90-89 in a thriller at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, early Monday in local time. The Boomers were expected to dominate Team Dragon in the knockout gold medal game after routing the Gilas Philippines and Iran’s Men’s National Basketball Team in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, respectively.
However, Australia fell behind early, 36-21, as China got off to a hot start in the opening half. Australia then showed great resilience, played precise basketball, and methodically cut into China’s lead. China had a chance to steal a win and a title, but Hu Mingxuan missed a three-point attempt. Australia improved to 18-0 overall since FIBA combined Asia and Oceania into one time zone in 2017.
Australian Boomers’ Outlook
The Australian Boomers’ outlook appears to be on the up-and-up. The Boomers won their third straight FIBA Asia Cup after edging China’s national team 90-89 in the gold medal game. The Boomers’ prowess is clear in their achievements and displays dominance on the international stage. Keep an eye on the team for future talent in the NBA.
In addition, LSU Men’s Basketball Head Coach David Patrick had a successful trip as an assistant coach for the Boomers. Patrick, 49, also served as an assistant coach on two Australian Olympic teams in 2021 and 2024, respectively. Patrick’s next step would be to attend the 2025-26 LSU men’s basketball team’s first team meeting of the fall semester on Sunday.
Final Thoughts
The Australian Boomers defeated the Chinese Men’s National Team 90-89 to complete the three-peat. The Boomers have every right to celebrate the three-peat. However, it’s important to note that China isn’t bitter about the nail-biting loss.
China’s players reportedly found positives amid the loss, as captain Zhao Rui said the team’s run was “just the start,” and it was a “pity” his team fell just short, but added that “this loss actually motivates us — we can learn from it and improve the areas where we need to improve.” Zhao finished with 10 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds.
