2025 Catholic University Cross Country Meet 1
The Catholic University cross country season for 2025 kicked off today at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. It was a beautiful day, sunny and in the 70s, as Catholic University and a handful of Division III foes began their 2025 season. The Catholic University men finished second.
The team that finished ahead of them on the men’s side was the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, with 15 points. In Cross Country, scores are the sum of the places of the top 5 finishers for a team. Maryland-Baltimore County scored 15 points. Catholic University In the Men’s Race
Catholic University’s men’s cross country began the 2025 fall season with a good performance, placing second at the Mount St. Mary’s 5K Duals. The Cardinals placed second out of seven teams, totaling 77 points, finishing only behind the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Freshman Michael Brunet finished second among Division III competitors, placing 13th with the top-placed Catholic University male runner, with a time of 16:22.7.
Just seven seconds behind Brunet came Joe Wolfe, a two-time all-conference selection. Wolfe placed 15th with a time of 16:29.9. Joey Locke placed 17th in the event with a time of 16:35.2. A tight pack of Catholic University runners finished within three seconds of each other. Clearly, it ran together, taking the 27th-30th spots in the event with Patrick Morris (17:00.9), Peter Winter (17:01.0), Alexandre Ramos (17:02.5), and David Stango (17:03.9).
Other male finishers included Tim Brown (17:18.8) in 34th place, Matt Haugh (17:27.9) in 38th place, Daniel Ponciano (17:30.4) in 39th place, Tim Sweeney (17:30.6) in 40th place, Brady Falcon (17:36.7) in 41st place, Richard Harrington (17:43.4) in 47th place, Kendrick DuPree (17:47.5) in 49th place, Shane Waring (17:57.5) in 53rd place, Jack Kildron (18:40.3) in 63rd place, and Joshua Leon (18:55.9) in 65th place.
Women’s Race
The women’s cross country team at Catholic University did not fare as well in the meet at Mount St. Mary’s. They placed 6th out of 8 teams, with a team score of 156 points. Olivia Sobkowicz did well, finishing 14th in her race in 19:23.89. Laurel McMahon finished in 28th place in 20:05.96. Bridgid Cavanaugh finished in 46th place in 20:58.52. Erin Roche finished right behind her in 47th place in 20:59.68. Rounding out the scoring for the Catholic University women was Alexa Grassi, who finished in 53rd place in a time of 21.31.64.
The Catholic university women hope to improve in the next meet at the Naval Academy on September 13. In this meet, both the home teams of Mount St. Mary’s University and McDaniel College finished worse. The University of Delaware won the women’s race with 30 points.
Conclusion
At this race, the course was five kilometers for both the men and the women. Some college cross-country courses are eight kilometers long. The head coach of the cross country and track team, Steve Rahn, said, “It was a great start to the year. The first years did a phenomenal job in their first collegiate race. The entire team ran well as a pack already, which will help as we progress through the season.” The next meet as the Cardinals continue their season is September 13, at the Naval Academy.
