Anthony Joshua Reflects on Usyk Defeats, Prepares for Future

Anthony Joshua

Presently, the powerful-looking Anthony Joshua has an excellent record of 28 wins and 3 losses. The only two men to have gotten the better of him in a fight are Oleksandr Usyk twice and Andy Ruiz, though Joshua’s never-say-die spirit and grit were on display when he fought back from a loss to Ruiz in 2019.

Coming Back From the Ruiz Match upset

June 2019 saw one of the biggest upsets in boxing when Andy Ruiz Jr. defeated him via a knockout game at Madison Square Garden. This left many in the dark about the future of the British boxer, but Anthony Joshua erased all doubts in true champion fashion. In December of that same year, he traveled to Saudi Arabia for a rematch against Ruiz. Once again, Joshua proved his in-ring intellect and made a unanimous decision to claim his belts back and cement his place as the heavyweight champion.

While still able to get sweet revenge on Ruiz, he was put back into the unknown as he faced Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk. In the first fight for the belts in 2020, Usyk defeated Anthony Joshua by unanimous decision and became a new world champion. Intentions were set to set the records straight, but the second fight in 2021 gave the same result; Usyk outclassed the Brit.

The back-to-back defeats to Usyk left a lasting impact on Anthony Joshua, as he recently admitted in an interview with DAZN. During the interview, Anthony Joshua opened up about his second loss to Usyk, expressing the pain it caused him. He stated that

“Usyk 2. Massively. I respect Usyk, yeah, I respect him, but it just hurt, the defeat. It was a weak performance. I wasn’t suppose to lose in my head.I give my life to this game, man. I give everything. I swear to you, I give a lot. Even talking about it now, it just makes me feel like…. I choke up a bit.

Joshua remains deeply frustrated by his defeats to Usyk, though he holds respect for the Ukrainian champion. He feels he has given his life to boxing and remains fully committed to the sport. Joshua views a potential future fight with Usyk as a crucial opportunity for redemption, and he is determined not to miss the chance to avenge his loss.

Upcoming Plans of Anthony Joshua

Sad as this may be, Joshua’s might not end with Usyk. He could get a chance to fight the Ukrainian in the third fight in 2025, but only if he was to beat Daniel Dubois in the next match. An unsuccessful attempt at getting past Dubois can mark the end of the path to a fight with Usyk.

Currently, at 27 years old, many people, including sports analysts, think that Joshua is yet to peak. The couple of wins against Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic have brought him hope. What is evidenced by these impressive stoppage wins is that Joshua is still a formidable force in the heavyweight division, and his desire for payback is persisting as ever. With a chance at facing Dubois in the future, all the fans focus on Joshua, thus waiting to see if he will keep on his comeback.
