Dallas Cowboys Trey Lance ‘Excited’ To Make Team Debut

Dallas Cowboys Trey Lance

The Dallas Cowboys might be looking for a new quarterback after this season. Dak Prescott is in a contract year, and the team is letting him play out the final year rather than extend him. While things could change in a year, the team seems okay with letting him walk. Part of it may be the team sees the future already on the roster. They traded for former first-round pick Trey Lance last season, although he has not played for the team yet. He will make his team debut against the Rams, and he is excited.

The Dallas Cowboys take on the Los Angeles Rams in the first week of the preseason. Trey Lance is currently the QB3 on the roster but will make his debut on Sunday afternoon. It has been a long road back to the field, as he was inactive for every game last season. The former third-overall pick is looking forward to it.

“I’m going into this game the same as I’ve gone into every other game my whole entire life — college, high school. I don’t think that I’ll put too much extra in it. I’m not gonna play any harder than I have in the past, or not harder. Big game for me. Big game for us so I’m excited to go out there and play well.”

It is tough to say that a preseason game is a big game, but for Trey Lance, it certainly is. He is out to prove that he is not a bust. The San Francisco 49ers were ready to make him the quarterback in the future, but a season-ending ankle injury made way for Brock Purdy to take the job. Even if it is not with the Dallas Cowboys, Lance needs to show he can be a starter in this league.

Limited Playing Time

Trey Lance has had very limited playing time in the past half-decade. Since 2018, he has only attempted 420 passes total. While many are quick to call him a bust, the sample size has been so small we really don’t know. Many great NFL quarterbacks have needed a few seasons under their belt before settling into the NFL game. He has had such inconsistency in his career that it is hard to make a judgment on him quite yet.

Maybe the Dallas Cowboys know something the rest of us don’t. They have had him in the building for the past year, and he was a top-five pick for a reason. If Trey Lance can impress in the preseason, the team may feel better about handing him the keys to the offense in 2025 and beyond.
