The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to make NFL history in 2024. No one in league history has ever won three straight Super Bowls. The scary part is the team struggled throughout the season but still was able to come out on top when it mattered most. One of the things that stops any NFL team is injuries. Training camp is when players are supposed to be the healthiest, so it is always a concern when someone sits out this early in the league year. The Chiefs are without their star defensive tackle, Chris Jones, as he is dealing with a nagging groin injury.
Kansas City Chiefs Chris Jones Injury
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported head coach Andy Reid officially confirmed a groin injury for Chris Jones. He was at practice but not in pads or a helmet, which left many people wondering why. The Kansas City Chiefs already gave him a huge contract, so he isn’t in a holdout for more money. The head coach confirmed the injury but didn’t provide much more than that.
In all likelihood, the team is being extra cautious at this time of the year. There is no point in pushing a veteran like Jones at this stage of the season. If he were to sustain a serious injury in training camp, it would leave a huge hole in the middle of their defense. Furthermore, it would take another star off the field after the team traded L’Jarius Sneed in the offseason. It’s something to watch but probably not a big deal at this point of training camp.
Three-peat In Play?
Obviously, anything is possible. However, the Kansas City Chiefs will have to get through a tough gauntlet again in 2024. While their division is very winnable, the conference has plenty of elite teams. They play a first-place schedule, which means they play many of the elite teams from last year. In the season opener, they have to take on the Baltimore Ravens, who will be hungry for revenge from last year.
It’s easy to point out reasons the team could not win, but at this point, Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes deserve the benefit of the doubt. They have shown they can win even without elite players up and down the roster. While many people may be tired of seeing the Kansas City Chiefs lift the Lombardi Trophy, there is something about witnessing history that is easy to cheer for.
This is what makes the Chris Jones injury slightly more concerning. Nothing derails a historic season quite like injuries, especially nagging ones like groins and hamstrings. Hopefully the team avoid them this season and make a run at history in January for a third straight Super Bowl.
