Boston Red Sox Draft Son Of Legendary Hall Of Fame Player

Red Sox Nation is going after one of their own.

The Boston Red Sox have seen many legendary players walk through the doors of their franchise. While every fan has their own favorite, there is one player who seems to be universally loved in the city of Boston. Slugger David Ortiz was a part of the franchise for years and had some iconic postseason moments with the team. It shouldn’t be a surprise the franchise wants to keep the family around. In the 19th round of this year’s MLB Draft, the Red Sox drafted D’Angelo Ortiz, the son of the Hall of Fame player.

D’Angelo Ortiz is a sophomore at Miami Dade Community College. Right now, he splits time between third base and the outfield. Like is father, he is known for his hitting. In 51 games for the Sharks, Ortiz slashed .377/.467/.434 and had 35 RBIs. Director of amateur scouting for the Boston Red Sox Devin Pearson talked about the pick and was adamant his dad being David Ortiz was a bonus and not the reason he was drafted.

“It means a lot to the organization. But I just want to make it clear that D’Angelo is a prospect and the reason we selected him is a result of the relationship that our area scout has had with the player for a long time. And we had him at a workout recently and got to interact with him, just felt like it was a good add to the organization. And it’s a plus that his dad’s David Ortiz, but we drafted him as a prospect.”

The numbers back up this claim. The younger Ortiz certainly has some impressive numbers and room to grow in the minors. It is simply icing on the cake that he could one day make his major league debut as a member of the Red Sox.

Dad Is Happy

The older Ortiz was over the moon that his son got drafted. He was even happier it was to his favorite team. He spent 13 years with the organization, and most people forget that he was a Minnesota Twin before coming to Boston in 2003. In an interview with MLB.com, Ortiz talked about how special it was the Red Sox drafted his son.

“I’m so happy, because that’s my team. That’s my team, and my son getting the opportunity … I always say this, ‘The sky’s the limit.’ When I came to the Red Sox, nobody was expecting me to be who I became, I just worked my butt off and God blessed me with my ability. And here we are today. You never know that [could be] the same thing that might work out for him. Who knows.”

This isn’t the only legacy pick that was made in this year’s draft. Another Boston Red Sox legend, Manny Ramirez, saw his son Lucas get taken in the 17th round by the Los Angeles Angels. It remains to be seen whether we will ever see these players in the majors. Baseball is a hard sport to break into. However, that doesn’t take away the accomplishment of being drafted to a team.
